Qantas app refresh (new look)

Ah. A soft launch.

Are the developers of this app less confident than most that there won’t be major bugs in the new release?

This is standard practice for any for any app updates. Not doing this would be pretty high risk!

Companies will do similar for websites where only a subset will see a new version initially.

Are there any actual new features with this update? Or just a new look and a bit more speed?
New look with a bit more speed. More will probably be released in the future. Hopefully they get rid of the ‘upgrade’ section when there is no upgrade, when you are seated in the best class.

It’s certainly faster. Looking at the version history, “Travel mode” is the main functional change for now besides the revamped UI.

Ah, (again). So most of the app updates in the App Store that I get every day have gone through the same sort of soft release process, and I've only noticed this one because of this thread? (Apologies for O/T)

So I assume this is Version 4 which @TheInsider mentioned was coming around the end of the month.

I'm going to guess there will be a slew of bugfix upgrades initially :D (major version release will usually see this of most software).

I will be curious to see if they actually improve the BP display so the colour for P1's doesn't look like Silver and cause issues (yes I know this is a VERY VERY elite world platinum one issue!).

I've not yet got the update available but it probably will be staggered with the rollout. I'm flying next week so hope to see it show up for me before then :)

I have deleted and downloaded new version - runs smoother - one feature lost is that is is not describing seats - old app used to say 'exit row', 'bulkhead' etc which was handy especially on partner flights where a OWE can actually select exit rows etc for free, this one simply has the seat number and of course no seat number at all for Jetstar

Generally yes, it's standard practice. Sometimes apps will also roll out individual new features gradually without an update. This is why you may find something in the app's changed even though there hasn't been an update recently.

Couple of major gripes I have.

Seat selection on my mobile now has a very inconveniently placed zoom in / zoom out button on my pixel. Its directly over the red confirmation button.

The other thing I've just noticed. The app now no longer shows your checked in BP following a flight delay. I can't open the trip either and while i can get my BP from MMB, it seems like a huge hassle.

Previously your BP would still be available to open and actually updated itself with boarding time quite well.

I had this issue last night after I was rebooked on QF after a VA cancellation. The QF flight ended up delayed. I had checked in but I was just continually prompted to "Review changes" from the app home screen and simply could not get back to an option to show the boarding pass. It would just take me to the ugly, yellow blocky screen which is basically the desktop browser where you review time changes view shown in the app. I could only get at the boarding pass by using the SMS I had fortunately sent myself during the check in process.

I've found that the vertical scrolling on page for a booking/flight to be very janky - the banner image scrolls with a delay (and a weird smoothing filter) compared to the main content. Sometimes I can even trigger the pull-to-refresh without scrolling all the way to one end.

Couple things here:
  1. It is recommended that you add your boarding pass to your Apple Wallet as soon as possible so that even if the QF app goes poopy in its trousers you'll still have a boarding pass to scan
  2. It is recommended that you get a paper boarding pass that you keep with you in case your phone goes poopy in its trousers as you'll still have a boarding pass to scan
  3. It is recommended that you have a physical QFF card that you keep with you which you can use to check in and board your flight irrespective of boarding pass
