Airports have their own music. Who knew?

Here in Japan railway stations have their own music. And here in Yokohama even some pedestrian crossings have their own theme music though you have to push an extra button to hear it. the crossing outside our hotel plays Coming through the Rye.

Yeah, that's actually relies on a bit of psychology (though, for marketing and crown control purposes). The older forms were the elevator music and department stores but it's now been used elsewhere, too.

The airline boarding or landing music is carefully selected. The only thing I'd wish is that the soundtracks would be longer. It gets repetitive very quickly if the boarding takes long.

In Bankstown, Sydney, I recall a walkway from the station to the Sports Club. Usually, that kind of a place would be graffitied all over but they play calm ambient music in the background and that place is usually pretty clean. I bet the music is there to deter and bore out the antisocial elements who'd rather be somewhere else than listening to it. Another form of using music in a public place for a purpose.

Anyway, this goes for 1hr! Anyone who’s caught CX138 knows boarding is usually about 30mins or less to get out before the curfew! The crew are usually scurrying around and not a scene of tranquility….

You still haven't convinced me. I still like the Japanese themes. My favourite is from Ebisu station. We stayed at the westin several times so used this station many times, It's theme was the Harry Lime theme. One of my favourite movies had this music written as it's song - The Third Man. Voted as the number 1 British film of the 20th Century.

I recently put two conferences on in Siem Reap with over 1,000 pax. We actually got the main hotel to change their music to ours, which we supplied. My colleague worked for many years with Shangrila/Sheraton/Hyatt and understands that "first hit" when the delegate walks into a venue. The hotel's original music would have gone down well at a funeral! We had it written into the contract. Once the conferences were over, it was back to their soundtrack.

Airports should just use "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" by Brian Eno. Though I guess it would be a bit boring if every airport stuck to that.

It wouldn’t surprise me if evil airports like SYD et al have subliminal messages hidden in their music telling us to spend money at the duty free and retail shops.

I bet it also has pink-hued lighting, that works to deter ”the youths” because it highlights pimples.
