Can I use my American Air points to book a flight for another person without me on the flight?

Yes, you absolutely can. There are no restrictions regarding who you can book for, unlike Qantas FF where the passenger must be a relative.

Note though there have been reports of people being questioned and even accounts frozen where the airline questioned whether this was a sale of points. So you should be aware of this possibility and have a good answer if they ask why you’d want to use your points for someone else.

Absolutely this. AA is well known for this. They take a very liberal view of ‘bartering’ points - which they prohibit. They froze the account of a guy who bought tickets for him and his mate for a holiday. His mate bought the accommodation. AA deemed it bartering

The only restriction that I’ve found is that the credit card used for payment must be in the same name as AA account holder.
