Qantas

Star Alliance

Pretty much per the title:

His nine favourite airline brands in the world (given his particular criteria)
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Starlux Airlines
  • Emirates Airline
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Air France
  • All Nippon Airways
  • Oman Air

Even ignoring his criteria, I don't think its a bad list.

I’m not sure he’s really talking about ‘brand’ here. But rather just his favourite airlines to fly?

I think in terms of actual branding - instantly recognisable, affinity - would be carriers such as Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Emirates, KLM, even the iconic Pan Am.

Qantas probably makes the list in limited markets, as would carriers such as Cathay, United, Air France and Japan Airlines.

Starlux? Maybe that’s a bit of product placement by OMAAT? Who’s heard of them outside a very limited market? Oman Air the same. Turkish might be the worlds biggest airline in terms of destinations, but how many actually ‘know’ what the brand stands for… other than asking ‘are they safe?’.

You have to look at his criteria 😊 .

I was going to carve out Starlux from my general agreement, but forgot 🤷‍♂️

Yeah..,but his criteria aren’t really bout ‘brand’. A brand is much more than just the name of the company.

So he might have his criteria, but ranking ‘overall marketing and brand presence’ in third place kind of defeats his whole article.

Oman Air, ANA and Starlux are hardly ‘global’ airlines, unless he just means ‘international outside the USA’!!

I have no brief to defend the guy, but he doesn't claim 'global' anywhere. This is what he wrote and his criteria:

Let me be clear — I’m not suggesting that these are the world’s best airlines, but rather that these are the airline brands that get me most excited. This can be for a variety of reasons, including:

* Because they offer a great passenger experience, including a good hard product, excellent service, etc.
* Because they are based in cool places, and connect awesome parts of the world
* Because they do a great job with their marketing and overall brand presence
* Because they’re super global, and whenever I fly with them I feel a sense of excitement and wanderlust
* Because they are airlines I have special memories on, either because of the onboard experience, or because of where I traveled on them

As you can see, I’m truly all over the place here with regards to how an airline can land on my list. You can expect that if someone asked me what my favorite airline in the world is, it would probably be an airline on the list.

My top 10 airline brands (defined by recognisability of name & what they bring to flying overall - not necessarily quality!) are these. Within a bracket, rank the same.

Gold
Singapore Airlines - no brainer
Emirates - no brainer
Cathay - no brainer
British Airways - no brainer

Silver
Qantas - can't really tell what the brand recognition outside Australia is, but Australians would have to put it in, I think
Lufthansa - moderate brainer
American - moderate brainer

Bronze
Aeroflot - for its longevity of name
Qatar - marginal for the list
Pan Am, or if you don't like that, United

@Mattg I'd be interested in your list.

Qantas has done well with its brand. I think it’s known in USA, UK, probably Japan. Cute little koalas and all that stuff. Plus Rainman reference.

The Americans even spell it Quantas!
