My husband, adult daughter and I used that route last month, flying from Johannesburg to Perth. We had flown from Cape Town to Johannesburg that afternoon. The flight left about 10:30pm, only 30 minutes late.

I know I don't fly well at night, but hadn't done it for some years and this was the best option. (The other options were to fly through Singapore or Dubai and both included overnight legs.)

Once again on this flight I travelled badly, feeling sick almost immediately. I had arranged for a power point in economy for my cpap machine but either the TA or SAA had st***ed up. The FAs didn’t even know that power points were available in economy. When I finally got the window seat with a power point sorted and the captain had inspected my cpap machine, I found it impossible to get even slightly comfortable. The seats are very hard, narrow and the armrests only raise by about 80degrees. Fortunately as the aircraft was only 20% full, my daughter snaffled a four in the centre and I quickly reassigned it to myself. Luckily, I had just bought a small battery with enough charge for one night to run my machine.

I had wanted to upgrade to business knowing that I would not travel well but was unable to do so as it was not a QF flight. SAA wanted nearly $4000 extra for a one-way business seat.

I don’t know how other people fly overnight. Usually, I have a stopover halfway and only ever fly north south.

I loved South Africa and would go back there and to the Seychelles in an instant. Maybe I will have to sail there and back.

Your right long flights in economy are not much fun even without the added complication if needing a breathing machine to complicate things.
So far to South Africa i have also flown with SQ via SIN, or CX via HKG, both are good options but for being efficient the direct flight is best.

Having sailed from SA to Fremantle I wouldn't recommend it. The slow and constant 'time change' as you sail disrupted my body clock and sleep patterns for the entire trip. Rather just get it over and done with in one day with a flight. Also not a lot of ports to vist on the way, just a lot of ocean!
