Well, I've just flown HEL-HND in PE, a 14 hour flight.

Thankfully the seat next to me was vacant and I was in a bulkhead window seat, which I believe is the the best seat in PE.

But, being forced to wear a mask for the entire flight was a real put off. The flight attendants enforced it as only the Japanese can.

But the worst of it was the catering. Just economy class food, on plastic trays and in plastic containers. Even the wine came in plastic bottles to be drunk in plastic glasses.

Sorry JAL, but a huge fail...

Depends probably on what you are looking forward to and used to. Me coming from the QF /AY / CX Y special meals, JAL beats them easily, even in Y (CX and JL Y are pretty equal to me). QFi is last by a country mile. And being offered champagne as an option was a nice add-on (and the drink was rather OK, too).

I'd had one in the HEL AY FCL and that's enough champagne for me. But champagne in a plastic "glass"?

Back when JAL used to run MEL-NRT-HEL**, I tried both the Y and the PE. The PE was nice (getting champagne and udon de sky, along with extra leg room) but on the 787, JAL's Y is so good that PE is not really worth it (and you get a proper reclining seat, rather than a slouching one in PE).

(**if anyone from JAL's reading, please, please, please move flights from MEL from NRT to HND so we can get to HEL again)
