Qantas to jettison float plans to separate units | The Australian
I thought the point of sending the maintenance off shore was to save the money that unions and their members were rorting out of an honest and endangered business like little old Qantas, the flying australian kangaroo.
But it seems that onshore maintenance is actually cheaper.
THE need to conserve cash during the economic downturn has killed off or postponed Qantas plans to float the units it was considering spinning off as separate businesses.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the airline was in cash and capital "preservation mode", and projects to float engineering, pilot training, freight and Frequent Flyer units as separate businesses had been axed or put on hold indefinitely.
Qantas is also moving Airbus A330 maintenance, previously done in The Philippines, to Australia, and the engineering and maintenance functions are being folded back into the airline.
