Interestingly, the first thing I thought was: "only 155 pax, not very full!"

/newltd on/
where's the mention of Qantas using airbuses?

/news off/

I know Qantas don't have any A340's but I thought the same thing, why is there no mention of Qantas in this article?!

At least they chose to divert and not continue to their destination on 3 engines like BA did when they lost and engine flying LAX-LHR and only made it as far as MAN with a fuel emergency.

I am really surprised this report made the local media. Such diversions are common around the world. Or were they trying to link this to the recent move for Airbus to manufacture aircraft in China and making an implication that this aircraft may have been build in China (as we all know it wasn't) through the use of the words "Chinese Airbus jet" in the headline?

I think it has to do with Chinese Airbus jet and also Air France disaster.

The only frightening aspect of the story is the thought of landing at :evil:SVO:evil:.

It was a "wire story" to use the old terminology - in other words, an agency story, in this case AFP - and was posted to their online site at 7.24am which probably means someone in the online team saw it and joined their own dots with the Air France incident. And they were probably too pushed for time and/or are not allowed to actually write any of their own copy which may have linked this to Qantas.

Why is that frightening? If I was on an a/c with a failed engine, I'd be wanting to land pretty much anywhere with an appropriate runway!

Sigh... Since we are unfamiliar with sarcasm, I'll just agree and say yes... Yes, it would be better to land in that sub-third-world hell-hole called Sheremetyevo than to press on to the final destination on three of four engines.

I thought there was more to it than it just being a second-rate airport.

Thought wrong then.

Must improve my sarcasm meter - maybe this would have helped:

I thought that Airbus did start maing aircraft in China for delivery to the Chinese domestic market?

It's a 200th-rate airport. Nothing is inviting. Nothing is easy. It's Hell International, which is why so many carriers have switched to the less-abysmal DME.

Ugh, sounds lousy. Also sounds like unfortunate personal experience?

Perhaps with so many carriers no longer there it had plenty of "windows" for an emergency landing  LOL.

I have no doubt that SVO has ample capacity to accommodate such emergencies. Unfortunately CA still calls SVO home, which is a pretty good reason not to fly into Moscow with them. DME is crowded these days, but less oppressive and 'Soviet' than SVO.

On my last two trips to MOW I've had the good fortune of being able to arrange to fly into Paris, and then onward to land at VKO on an aircraft operated by the company I work for, which is certainly a lifestyle to which I could easily become accustomed.

The take-home message? SVO sucks.

That's what I assumed when I read the thread title. Awful!
