Family Award Bookings

I earnt my status from work travel pre-covid and typically have only ever redeemed classic awards for myself as my partner who has her own status and we have usually been able to book separately on the same flight and then just select seats together.

However, I'm wanting to surprise my parents with a trip for their 50th Wedding Anniversary using classic awards and had some questions I hope the brains trust here can help me with.

I will travel with my parents, as neither are confident flyers.

1. Can I book 1 cash fare for me so I get SCs and 2 award seats for my parents on the one booking online?

2. Do I need to sign Mum up for a QFF account to book for her, or is name enough? Dad has an account but has not flown for about 10 years.

3. Will I be able to select sets for all 3 using my status?

4. If for some reason they cant travel due to illness, will I need to cancel all 3 seats, or is it possible to just cancel 2 and keep mine?

5. Is there going to be any sort of catch when cancelling like QF wanting to speak with my Mum who would have no idea about flight bookings? Assume the points will come back to me and not their accounts if cancelled?

3. Almost certainly not (assuming 1 definitely not possible)

If booked separately, can i get the PNRs linked so I can select seats for all?

Otherwise I guess I need to book all 3 seats as a classic award, so I can then use my status to select seats for all?

Since you make the booking using your QFF points, the booking is in your QFF portal. you can select seat for your family.

But the seating that can be selected is only reflective of their own QFF status not the OPs

Took me a couple of hours to find dates where there were 3 award seats each way at a time of day that was suitable for my parents i.e. lunch time, not crack of dawn or later night. To avoid Jetstar I needed to stay away 4 nights not 3 but trip is a couple of days before their actual anniversary so close enough.

I think my status did help a little with seating was able to select row 9, as soon I selected an aisle seat it automatically gave my parents the middle and window seat in the same row.

Now off to see if I can book two rooms on hotel reward points.

If you book multiple tickets either Award or revenue for yourself and family then the member with the highest status dictates what seating is available.

If you just booked Award tickets for your family from your account but you are not a traveller in the same booking then the seat choice is dependent on their status.

And if you are traveling on a paid ticket on the same flight as your relatives on award tickets, you can call the Qantas Customer Service line and have seating allocated for everyone based on your status - I've always been told this is "linking the tickets", but some others posting here have said that there is not an actual link, just they allocate the seats together when you call...either way, it works. I'm WP and Mr Seat0A is LTG and I have always been able to get seats for him (next to me) based on my status for both paid and award bookings. We often travel this way as I travel for work (paid ticket) and he comes along for the ride (award ticket).
