New United BNE-SFO route from October 2022

$$$ Millions of Queensland taxpayer monies p!ssed against the wall, to subsidise and underpin this route that clearly will never work for them financially.

Years back, United cancelled the direct MEL-USA flights as even they did not make money! United tried BNE-USA 20 years back and of course it flopped then too. BNE (or ADL) zero chance of making any money unless Anastasia Government keeps tossing money at it.

How do you know this route will "clearly never work for them financially"? Tickets only just went on sale and the first flight is still more than four months away.

VA was able to fill a daily 777 from BNE-LAX pre-covid, and there's now a gap there which hasn't yet been filled by another airline.

Plus with BNE being a VA hub, SFO being a UA hub and VA codesharing on the service, there's lots of potential connectivity on both ends.

Maybe, maybe not. It's too early to say when the route literally only went on sale yesterday.

Personally I don't think the BNE-SFO route is fundamentally flawed for the reasons I've outlined above. Will United find a more profitable route to deploy a 787-9 when the QLD government funding stops? We'll see.

Interesting. So it looks like the SYD-BNE tag on UA was "on and off during the 90s" before being dropped by 94?

There are also the European Summer Seasonal markets where the 789s switch to Asia for the NW.

Taking into consideration many of the Asian markets are offline (mostly in China) and won't be back on for a while, plus the gradual return of the PW 772s. they'd have to deploy the surplus 789s somewhere.

Due to the Asian markets being offline for the NW, this leaves an opening to allocate at least 1 789 to BNE for NW season. Which enabled UA to inform the Queensland Government / BAC that there is at least 1 aircraft available for the partial subsidised service.

Interesting to say it states that UA previously operated the x3 weekly SYD-BNE tag service between Aug 91 (sic) and January 1994. I'm assuming it's a typo and it was meant to say August 1993.

That was the first thing I thought of, when I saw the comment from Annastacia that United had never before flown to BNE. I have very clear memories of UA's LAX-SYD-BNE flights of the early 90s. You'd think her people would bother to get the details right.

And of course Premier Annastacia has to go up there and announce the new UA flights herself on the local news.. "This is great for Tourism in Queensland and Great for Competition in Queensland!" (lol), although the upcoming UA flights are partially taxpayer subsidised through the AAIF agreement.

And rewrite history into the bargain! She's wrong to say that United has never served BNE before. UA flew LAX-SYD-BNE flights in the early 1990s.

Not to get overly political, the AAIF is a 50/50 partnership between Qld and the Airports, thus technically it's $100m from Queensland, with $50 million from QAL (CNS and OOL), $25 million from MCY (Palisades) and $25 million from BAC (BNE)
