The Planespotting/General AV Geek Thread

I guess she will be freed soon, or is she one of the two that are being paid off?…
I'm no expert but it looked rather as if she ( and a sister plane near by) were being readied to fly again. Out the front by the main hangars rather than in the back with all the other mothballed planes- I'd be surprised if they weren't flying again. I tried really hard but unfortunately could not get close enough to catch the registration numbers.

For those not following the Project Sunrise thread I’ll add this here as it’s a very rare sight in SYD.

Spotted outside Hangar 96 this arvo.

Interesting flight for rex ZL6473 tonight… delayed and by the looks of it, three attempted landings? Now on its way back to sydney ZL6473 (RXA6473) Regional Express Airlines Flight Tracking and History - FlightAware

I checked the weather in Narrandera… doesn’t seem anything untoward. Wonder what the issue was? (flight has just been updated to sydney->sydney. Flight time so far coming up to three hours on a saab340… another 40 or so left to return to Sydney (distance sydney to narrandera is 430km)

First attempt was Griffith, followed by two attempts at Narrandera. One on RWY14, then a second on RWY32.

Worth noting though that this flight operates as SYD-NRN-GFF-SYD.

Are u still in good standing with CASA? :)
No. I didn't keep anything with them up to date after I retired, so no licence to fly anything, much less a 747. They were an organisation that I was glad to see the rear end of.

What weather did you check?

If the cloud was below about 500 AGL, you won't get in.

I looked at BOM, it said partly cloudy, 20 degrees or something. I was looking to see if it was heavy rain or thunderstorms etc.

You need to look at the TAFs or TTFs. The normal BOM weather is useless for this application. Fog/low cloud/reduced visibility will be the most likely issues. Places like Narrandera have nothing in the way of navigation aids, nor will the aircraft flying there be equipped to operate in poor vis conditions.

They killed the TTF since you retired - TAF3 now (http://www.bom.gov.au/aviation/taf3/).

Well this is the current TAF

so probably a good indication it was like that yesterday too.

31 May (rnz.co.nz)--->'Emotional': One of New Zealand's oldest passenger planes completes final flight
One of New Zealand's oldest passenger planes still in service, a Convair 580 owned by Air Chathams, has just completed its very last flight.

The classic plane flew from Auckland to Wānaka, departing at 11.30am and landing about 2.30 this afternoon. The aircraft's next stop is the National Toy and Transport Museum in Wānaka where it will retire.

Looks to be ZK CIB

747SP to be retired

One final Christchurch mission for world's largest airborne observatory
<snip>
The mission of the modified Boeing 747SP aircraft is to study the infrared universe and the solar system. This includes the formation of new solar systems, black holes and the birth and death of stars.
In each 10-hour overnight flight it heads into the stratosphere at 38,000-45,000 feet, which puts it above 99% of the Earth’s infrared-blocking atmosphere.

Air India's VT-ANZ (787-800) has been sitting at MEL since Monday. It was supposed to fly AI308 (MEL-DEL) on the 21st but looks like AI brought other 787s over to fly it the past few days. Any insights?

This may be of interest:

Actually saw it this afternoon when visiting a friend at the RAAFA Retirement complex. The Museum there has a little but impressive collection of aircraft.

Sitting in the VA lounge and just watching it push back. AI309 five days late.
