From news.com.au:

A HOTEL in Austria has outraged local tourism and fellow hotel owners by banning Jewish guests.

The Haus Sonnenhof apartment hotel in the village of Serfaus, Tyrol, is said to have turned away a Jewish family because of "bad experiences" in the past, the daily Tiroler Tageszeitung reports.

If this mentality was applied by hotels to all ethnic groups in the world then none of us would get accomodation anywhere.

Racism and bigotry is alive and well.
This is one hotel that would be on my immediate ban list.

Oh yes, particularly Australians. We'd all have big trouble finding accommodation anywhere....

But on a serious note, let's hope this hotel has done more damage to itself than good.

Maybe those "past bad experiences" date back to 1939.

This sort of thing only occasionally hits the media. Normally such bigotry is much more subtle (present day Iran excepted). It is nevertheless still disturbingly common.

The thing I thought was did the hotel ban them because they were Jewish, or because of previous bad experiences with them, and they just happened to be Jewish, so the media has latched onto this one part?

The article was very brief, so people could just be jumping to conclusions here.

Much more coverage in the international media and no the family concerned had not been even to the region before and have decided to holiday elsewhere.Personally I am not surprised at this reaction and it is to be deplored.Just remember the Pope was wanting to let a Holocaust denier back into the church.

That's true, but The Haus Sonnenhof apartment hotel did not realize the negative effective on the business as well as on the country.

Their problem is that they are bigoted, not that they made a bad business decision.

Yes. They may be just tapping into a sentiment in the community (in Austria and other countries), and depending on the degree of the sentiment could actually be making a good business decision (one hopes not, but you never know). In Australia, it's not unheard of for prominent figures to tap into pre-existing prejudices (not necessarily anti-jew) for short term gain.

When looking for accommodation in Thailand on the internet it is not uncommon to see conditions like "we do not accept bookings from people of middle-eastern and/or Indian descent".

I don't understand why Australians get labelled as racists around the world, especially SE Asia, when there are many countries that are able to get away with various forms of racism, or discrimination....
