from news.com.au:

The White House has apologised after one of Barack Obama's presidential planes flew alarmingly low over New York city, sending residents into a panic and triggering fears of a new 9/11.

"While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption," said Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office.

Whichever Media guy thought it wasa clever ide and ortganised it should hget his cough kicked.

One flying passenger type jet low there is just dumb and insensitive

Two doing it without notifying the locals is even stupidier!!!!!!!!!

Hah, saw this on the news tonight, it looked bad. Important to stress it wasn't the White House that organised it though. Stupid Department of Defence.

Maybe someone at the DOD was doing a mileage run to get status

The greatest tragedy is that prior to 9/11, New Yorkers weren't this jumpy and paranoid. It's very, very sad. I can't blame them for being edgy, since the events of 'that' day were a little traumatic, but they've never been the same.

It would have been courteous for someone from Air Force to call the Mayor's office...

of course the fighter escort make it even worse for the NY locals watching the "flyover".

The big thing is, the speculation of why they didn't want to tell anyone, is because they don't want Joe Public taking photos of the presidential plane. Apparently you're not meant to. So they told the police and such, but also told them not to tell anyone else.

Oh, please... Yeah, for sure if you don't want people taking photos of your aircraft, the LOGICAL thing to do is to fly a few laps over the most densely populated region on the entire North American continent .

Sorry, I've only had four hours sleep, but even so, it's a bit silly, isn't it?

Go to airliners.net and you'll be able to find photos of the aircraft used to transport the PotUSA, in abundance.

Well that's what they said in the news, both print and TV. It's not like there's anything special hanging off the bottom of the aircraft anyway right? But there's also the fact they make money off pictures of AF1 over Mt. Rushmore, so pictures of it over NY-GZ or Statue of Liberty could be a ice money earner for the Department of Defence.

Who knows what they were thinking.
