VA2.0 International Partners

Thanks all. Yes it's for March 2022, and YVR not on the radar :)

Looks like SQ with $$ the way to go...

BTW looked at the QA fare sale on at the moment - however "mrs" + "Qatar" not compatible...

Grin, sorry, thought QA was an IATA airline code.
But its OK, for Czech Airlines.
Never flown them, if they are still around, would they be a good J hard/soft product, ie, airline to fly with.
If they flew to Aust and were a VFF partner, would it be a ++ or +- or a -.
Seeing up to now, VA and VFF have not confirmed any more partnerships, apart from the breakup of VA and DL, and the join up of VA and UA.
VA and SQ, will we earn VFF points on non code shares, as its now, we have to book with SQ for flights from Au - overseas, and purely have an SQ flight number, not an VA xx_x, flown by SQ, and not bookable on the VA website, which have very few international destinations.

Ah, just had a look, so, OK filed for bankruptcy in early 2021.
Still flying limited routes, just like VA when PS put in for VolAd.
Ok, back to thread, sorry for the thread going off the runway.

Seriously though, what/which airline can VA partner with?
Not *A by the looks of VA not wanting to openly (as a group) join them, they don't seem to want ST either, and OW is out.

Think Bain will be looking at floating part of their VA stake on the ASX later this year and gradually selling down before considering Alliances at this point.

Although they haven't 'denied' nor 'admitted' in the News Corp Media, I'm just gonna assume the plan for Bain to refloat VAH on the ASX will be the case for Bain going by their past track record.

All I can say is good luck to the investment banks, possibly UA and others if they were to grab minority VAH stakes later this year.

Warren Buffett, the world's savviest investor, totally dumped his massive stake (average 10%) in the major US airlines only a year or so back. And lost about $40 BILLION.

An embittered Buffett said in 2007 investor letter: “If a farsighted capitalist had been present at Kitty Hawk, he would have done his successors a huge favor by shooting Orville Wright down” and referred to a soured bet on US Air in the 1990s.

“The airline industry’s demand for capital ever since that first flight has been insatiable. Investors have poured money into a bottomless pit, attracted by growth when they should have been repelled by it,” he continued.

Buffett should have re-read his own 2007 newsletter and sage advice! Would have saved him losing $40 Billion or whatever he lost cold in recent years. :D

Fact check? Articles I read suggested he lost a substantial portion of his initial investment of $7b when he sold out at the trough after covid hit. In any event for a $700b valuation of BH, it’s only 1% …. A day’s swing on the markets 🤣

Typo of $40 Billion for $US4 BILLION or so loss. :D

But what is a mere few BILLION to a Bulletin Board target audience? Does not matter WHO lost it, it is still BILLIONS of loss.

Investing in any Airline is insanity. I can bet you Warren Buffett never EVER does again.

ONE crash or incident can near destroy consumer confidence overnight. Look at MH. None of it their fault but a disaster for PR.

Many national carriers are there simply as their Governments have tossed endless Billions into the black hole, to save national face, in the past 5 or 10 years.

Thai, Malaysian, Alitalia, Ethiopian, SAA etc, etc.

''The famed investor's Buffett company previously owned between 8% and 11% of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Berkshire spent a total of $7 billion to $8 billion in building those stakes, which were worth over $10 billion at the end of 2019, SEC filings show.

However, shares in the four airline stocks plunged with the broader market when pandemic fears peaked last spring. Buffett and his team dumped their stakes in April, likely netting about $4.5 billion based on the quartet's average trading prices that month.''

...and the Australian Government hasn't been tossing $ into ZL, VA and QF??? (QF being the 'national' carrier)

Since Covid yes of course they have (as have near all governments globally) -- Thai, MH, Alitailia, SAA were heavily supported basket cases before anyone HEARD the word COVID.

And if the Middle Eastern Airlines needed to run as profitable stand-alone companies for the past 10 years they'd all be lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng broke. :)

Investing in airlines is a disaster. COVID has just made it a MEGA disaster as the management of Bain Capital would agree I am sure. Worst investment they have even made most likely.

In context $4b loss is not hugely significant.

Look at Berkshire Hathaway today, it lost 1.3% of its value on the stock exchange, a cool $9b…

''Does not matter WHO lost it, it is still BILLIONS of loss.''

Some folks just do not read.

If James Packer had done it he'd literally be penniless today, to make it easier to understand.

Buffett for decades lampooned the stupidity of buying airline stock. As I said, I bet he NEVER does again.

Yeah but Berkshire Hathaway losing $4b is like James Packer losing $20m. These folk take informed gambles with huge sums, whether it’s Bain or Buffet/BH. They may sound like huge figures to us, but they’re certainly not betting the farm on airlines. Just frittering around the edges.
