QR withholding award seats from Qantas?

Yesterday I was able to get a QR seat from South Pacific to Africa using AA miles that wasn't showing on QF.
I'm guessing that LHR - SYD would be a popular route they prob won't release till later on. I know QF hasn't released seats for July '22(yet) even though its under 11 months away. I'm sure its a money spinner route. That said its sad I can get a seat on BA or JL but not my national carrier who I hold status with.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear. I was able to use AA miles for a seat on QR from South Pacific to Africa that was not available with QF points. That is, AA sold me something Qantas couldn't.

Relax. My post was pertaining mostly to Qantas not releasing or showing any premium seats on its services in that time frame.

If you mean QR awards, they do go quickly esp at prime times such as the northern summer. You need to snap those up when they're released which, for QR, is 360 days.
I was religiously looking from the release date for both QR and QF but alas nothing. Win some and lose some with redemption bookings. I still managed every sector in J for my RTW for which I'm thankful.

Is that part of the problem? QR releases seats at 360 days out but QF booking system goes out to 353 days - although you can see beyond that up to a point. AA members often complain that they can't get premium QF seats because of their 330(?) day booking constraint (if that still exists)?

Having mentioned that, it still doesn't explain why others are seeing available seats on AA etc (within overlapping booking windows) but nothing on QF.

Out of curiosity, I was looking online as far out and whilst there is reasonable multiple whY availability, the best you see to/from Oz in premium was 1x J seat (if you're lucky) - as others have said.

Yep, just the 1 x J QR seat released to/by QF (ex-Australia) it seems and you need to be quick to nab it.

You can search further forward than the QF booking system's 353 days but you may be correct that some people -- not members of AFF but others who are less conversant with the system -- don't know this and therefore miss the opportunity.

Some extra data points, via AA.com, I can see quite a few coming days and weeks with multiple J seats ex-SYD (and more if connecting through BNE). eg 23 Sep had at least 3x J.

It might be a COVID / Tavel restriction thing, but possibly/probably QR releasing seats closer to the departure date - which is good thing - do they always do that?

Anyway, generally zip J seats showing on QFF for the same dates.

It would be great if someone had the power to find out why?

I just redeemed 2 x J QR awards MEL-MAN with CX. There appeared to be multiple QR awards available for almost every day.

AA also has some juicy award availability compared to QF.

I've done the same for next Sept: 2 x J QR SYD-ZRH @ 90,000 AM.
Maybe it’s time for a longtime QFF’r like me already with LTG to seek out a more rewarding OW program that I can still get to OWE but also benefit from decent redemptions!

Alas, I already have a shed load of QFF points to burn and zero points on other OW carriers. Apart from buying points, amassing a decent haul to use will take time without CC earn etc…

PS
By all accounts QR, ironically to this thread is not one of the go to programs?

Correct. In most regards, QR Privilege Club is a pretty awful program. It also has no (useful) credit card partners in Australia.

That's the dilemma, right? QF points are so easy to come by. I also have a (garden) shed load and wish I would have used them for this next trip but I also had Amex MRs and converting some of them to Asia Miles to get my preferred flights proved too big a temptation.

I'm an AsiaMiles member (not Marco Polo), and have transferred from both Amex Rewards, and Westpac Altitude. I much prefer a program where there are decent awards available rather than a rubbish program like QF where you can easily get points, but there are very few awards, and those that are available come with other challenges like very high YQ.

I struggled to find any award seats in J departing Aus/Asia region to Europe for September next year. I did have more luck finding seats in J on the way home, however - departing Europe back to Asia; MXP - DOH - KUL

Argh this is so annoying. I can see 4x QR business reward seats from Perth to Doha, connecting on to Europe in 2022. But QF only shows 1 seat and the phone agent couldn't see any more. Have to settle for Emirates for now, which isn't any cheaper because it's moved to the Partner award chart.

The QFF award availability online has been bad for many years, I've not been able to book on the phone certain flights showing online, and the phone team have also been able to see flights that weren't showing online. It's a bit of a lottery.
