So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

legendary donk [2H (?)]
Yes the 2H was an 4L inline 6 naturally aspirated for the 40 and I think some of the 60 series.
The 1H was a smaller inline 6 engine preceding the 2H for the 40 series. 3.x litres?

Inline 6 are the bees knees from a dynamic balance perspective - especially 1st and second order.

Bring back the long bonnet vehicles!!!

Not this one
Lol!!!
I’ll grant you that one. There is always an “ugly” duckling in the family!. Not you, the car...

The first 1000 went for $40,000. After that they were $50,000
Friend bought x2 LC200 Saharas off the Showroom floor of one dealer during the depths of Corona 2020 when the economic demand tanked.
He sold it back to same dealer for total circa $40k profit when demand went through the roof.

He was a bad friend because he didn’t advise me to do the same.

Not this one. :)

The first 1000 went for $40,000. After that they were $50,000. Should have taken Neal’s advice and made a tidy $10,000 profit!

There was one of those little babies sitting on the showroom floor when my son and I were taking delivery of his LC200. I sat in it only...

It seems the model 3 has no competition in its price range..

Considering it before eofy or just wait till more EV cars arrive in 3-4yrs

It depends on how realistic you're being - EVs will certainly come down in price, but I'm not sure if it's within the time horizons most are hoping. The improvements are incremental, and vehicles across the board aren't all that cheap at the moment, so it comes down to motivation more than anything.

What I can say having owned one is, you're unlikely to miss out on anything. All of the tech is beyond what any competitor offers now - the only potential change I can see in the next 5 years is that some manufacturers may adopt 800V architectures vs the Model 3's 400V which does provide somewhat faster charging at the 350kW fast chargers, but I'm pretty sure the Porsche Taycan is the only 800V EV in Australia so far and it's about 230K drive away, so... yeah... likely not coming to the Model 3's market anytime soon, and even if it was, people tend to think that charge times and range are the most important things about EVs, until they get them. The only time I do DC charging are the ~5 times a year I drive long distances (would have been 1 at most with my petrol car) and 5 days out of a year really don't have that much of an impact on the overall ownership experience of a vehicle.

YMMV of course.

Is it true the E is being built without a front radar?
Well the U.S.A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration certainly thinks so as it has downgraded the safety rating for the Model 3 becuse of the radar removal. But note the last line that Type 3's built for use outside the US will still have the radar.

The Model 3 in North America is, but for all other markets it isn't. So unless you're buying one for the holiday house in Aspen, it's not really an issue for us. I also don't have even a slight opinion on this, as I was convinced by those apparently in the know years ago (clearly I am not an AP engineer) that Tesla absolutely could not implement autopilot without LIDAR as their key competitor in the space Waymo did, and I think the last 5 years has proven them to be successfully correct (as LIDAR is extremely expensive and has shaved ca. $10K off the price of Teslas).

So while I don't think I'll be making any investments off of Tesla's advice, I certainly wouldn't be second guessing them when it comes to either battery technology or autonomous driving technologies.

Well those long trips are where the anxiety is highest.

Some people have regretted an EV and gone back to ICE
I don't doubt some have, but it goes both ways. My wife's VW TDI is about 5,000km from its next timing belt change (~1.5k, that's gonna be fun) so I am anxious about that. I've driven my EV across 3 different states and would jump in it in a heartbeat for a drive up the eastern seaboard, the only anxiety I would have is if I were heading from SA westbound or into FNQ or NT because I'm a melbournite and I am ignorant to what infrastructure lies out those ways, but the BNE SYD MEL ADL corridors are extremely well covered and documented as are most regional routes now (Gippsland and Geelong coast to Warrnambool included).

I'd much rather drive the EV than the ICE until I get that next $2K service to ensure I don't end up with cracked cylinder heads half way from home to somewhere else. I've had the EV for 1 and a half years now without a single service (none needed to date) and I'm about to drop 4 times what I've ever spent on charging including at home charging on a single service for the ICE that I rarely drive.

You can see why I won't be going back, and thats not even considering how much better the drive and the tech is in the EV.

I’ve done the VW timing belt service (which included the water pump as its run of the same belt) 4 times.

Each time the belt was changed at 105000km it looked pristine. One car had it done twice at 105k and 210k

Yes, no regular ICE type service needed for EV. Not only will EV change the way we see transportation but the current car dealer business models will also have to change
Fixed price cars anyone?

What are you suggesting, that I'd get another 100k out of it, or that I am wasting my money? As we know the belt deteriorates with both time and distance so given I have an EV I drive primarily it is probably not in the same state, but if I chance it and save my money I might end up with a big expensive brick.

Are you using Android auto on your VW? Do you miss that on the Tesla?

Yep, I do on both counts simply because I'm used to it as an interface, but at the same time I have 4G connectivity on the Tesla with Spotify and Netflix and YouTube and the ability to use the Tesla API to track all of my drives and charges and I can control it over 4G via my phone.. yes I lose the android auto interface but I'm not sure I've lost much functionality wise, it bothers me a lot less than many others but is a legitimate loss of functionality and if someone was invested enough in android auto to buy a car based on its support they might avoid Tesla.

But there is no anxiety waiting for that interval to arrive because the interval is conservative.
I am no less anxious, because just as I mentioned I expect having been in Melbourne through several lockdowns I am probably on the wrong side of chance based on how long it didn't get a drive for, and I am still anxious about spending the money and so don't want to drive it unnecessarily, hence why I'll drive the EV.

(Clearly im not actually that anxious about it but I'm being about as honest as someone with an EV is when they say they have range anxiety as if pulling in to a charger is somehow more difficult than pulling in for petrol. Mine shows me on a screen where to go and won't even direct me on a map to my destination without taking me to a charger if I'll need one. It ain't rocket science)

Thanks, I might be one of those.. Just trying to weigh it up.

I use Pocket casts for podcasts and YouTube music for my music, Amazon prime for the little bit of video streaming. Don't use Spotify or Netflix.

I also use WhatsApp and signal for messaging. A.A can handle everything!
