Book a flight and Extend Current status to 2022

Does anyone have any insights/intel etc what Qantas might consider with people who have their status expiring/status anniversary in early January 2022 where the status extension discussed in this thread doesn’t apply anymore.

My QF year literally ends in the first week of January 2022 (😢😢😢) and given the current developments I am convinced that I can’t get the missing 280 SC points together to retain Gold in early Jan 2022 (unless there is a super generous DSC campaign coming).

I re-qualified in Jan 2020 by myself due to the travel done in Jan - March 2019 but currently not doing any travel for (intl.) work. Is it likely that I end in the bad luck corner and get downgraded to Bronze?

Qantas membership years run through to the end of months, it would be unlikely you have a membership year ending in the first week of January. It will either be end of December, or end of January.

While I suspect Qantas will do something, I doubt that we'll find out what that is until later in the year.

Are you sure? QF status generally ends at the end of a month, e.g., December 31st, January 31st. I've never heard of one ending "during" a month. If your status year ends on December 31, you are in luck: just need to book a flight for travel before the end of the year (if you haven't already done so).

In my Qantas App, it says I have 244 days left to re-qualify for Gold which is 6 Jan or 7 Jan 2022 (depending how you count). Having said that, you guys are right, in 2020 & 2021, the actual renewal was processed around 28 January. So yeah, I fall into the 30 January renewals then and hence just past the current know extension.

Looks like you will have to wait for the next offer......

If this is your intention, may I suggest booking a Qantas international classic flight reward which is unlikely to actually fly, such as SYD-HND 1 Nov for 31k points + $171 taxes. Two possible scenarios:

Scenario 1: Qantas cancel the flight, which they will probably be forced to given Japan's very poor vaccination progress. You will get a full refund of points & taxes PLUS retain Platinum as it was an involuntary cancellation.

Scenario 2: Flight looks like it will operate, you cancel on day of departure per the Fly Flexible terms and get a full refund of points & taxes.

As @mviy states, a voluntary cancellation would give Qantas reason to rescind your status extension. For this you might want to book a random intrastate domestic award after 1 Nov which you can fly in case of scenario 2, or cancel with no penalty if scenario 1 eventuates.

So, I just rang and released a sneaky classic reward to HBA for later this week and combined some old gift vouchers for the return.
Now I just have to organize work!!
First flight in either a RPT or light aircraft since July.

Hello. a lazy request/enquiry from me - hoping to save a call to QFF call centre - and reading through this massive thread.

Regarding the "take one QF flight to extend your status for 12 months" thingy from a while back...
  • My current Platinum year ends 31-MAY-2021.
  • In March 2021 I booked & paid cash for 3 x new QF flights.
  • 3 x sectors flown in early March (MEL-BNE-CNS and CNS-MEL)
  • SC & points for those have been credited at that time.
  • Today when I logged in I noticed that it's saying still need 1 more eligible flight.
Based on what others have experienced, my question(s) are:
  • Will this just "take care of itself" at the end of May when my QFF Anniversary occurs? And I will get another 12 months of Platinum to 31-MAY-2022 ?
  • Or will I have to ring QFF to sort it all out?
Thanks for your help & advice.

Correct. You don't need four sectors to be eligible for the extension, just one booked before end of year.

Yes, it will take care of itself around the end of May/start of June.

Provided you used a new booking reference (PNR) generated on/after 23 November 2020 you'll be fine. You'll also find that up to 500 SC will rollover (so that could be up to 265 based on your present tally as 600 of the 865 would be the status bonus that they gave to every Plat that doesn't rollover).

Edited: 600 not 500 SC was given to Plats, see below

Once the booking has been made, there’s nothing else to do, other than wait until the first week of June where you can expect an email from QF congratulating you on retaining WP. Anyway, that was my experience, for my QFF year ending on 30th April.

IIRC, they gave every plat 600 SC.

Ah, yes. Only some were eligible for that 50 per month. It depends which month you membership year ends how many of those you would have got.

That makes more sense.. I was wondering (forgetting) how I ended up with 800+ SC when I've only taken 3 x 15 SC flights during the last membership year. :D

So you should get those rolled over. On my reckoning your unrollovable status support would be 50*4+600 SCs, so possibly you got 20 other rollovable SCs some other way.

Well, hold on to your hats but I just had a positive outcome! Received a phone call just now (I don't actually know if this is in response to my query on realisation last week or just what Qantas are doing for recently fallen members) but if I book flight between now and end of June and fly it by end of this year then WP will be restored. And can be the same conditions as the original offer. I was expecting the 80,000 offer based on the preliminary chat but i much prefer this outcome. Off to book a flight before any borders slam shut.

Please tell us that it was not Manila calling. 🤭

Edit: If genuine, maybe keep quiet for awhile unless it gets withdrawn before you book. 😉

Already booked. And I was given a telephone number. She likely did know about my numpty booking. I mentioned what I’d done and it didn’t take a lot of explanation for her to restate it.

I feel certain Qantas will again do something for those of us with January and February anniversaries, probably a similar book and fly one sector. However I couldn't be bothered waiting and booked in J to visit friends on the Gold Coast in June while the DSC promotion was running. I’ve flown quite a few domestic routes this year already and with the DSC, I’ll renew WP myself without further anxiety.

Has anybody who had their status extended from either 31 March or 30 April from booking a flight had their status extension rescinded through cancelling the booked flight? I had booked one to New Zealand, need to change dates, but am wondering whether if I book a new one (to get current DSC offer) and cancel the other flights whether it will rescind my status extension from Mar 31.
