Hi,

Flying on QF73 on Sunday (SYD-SFO). Until last night was looking empty in J (EF showing J9 / C9 / D9 and seat map plenty of unallocated seats). Y was looking pretty full (Y5 / H4 / B4 etc)

Overnight first and business went to nearly empty (now F1 / A1 / J2 / D2 etc), so I suppose my upgrade chances have pretty much disappeared.

Is this normal? Why would so many seats disappear overnight?

It seems sold out in WHY

Large block of bookings?
YM decided to effective assign upgrades now rather than later (just not advertising)

Does CheckMyTrip rturn a seat map?

That doesn't surprise me - Y has been steadily falling over the past two weeks or so. NOQ went to 0 about a week ago, and then the higher classes have started falling.

Large block of bookings?

Possible. But this does mean about 5 F seats and 7+ J seats disappeared overnight. Do corporate TAs that get around to ticketing these flights have an effect (i.e. the seats are still available until ticketed? I assume not)

CheckMyTrip returns a seat map for Y (which I'm currently booked in). I can't see J or F

Maybe there were a lot of flexible/tour bookings that YM expected significant returns before the flight, but this has not happened.
Code:

Search: Departing SYD on 01/03/09 for SFO
Flying QF flight 73 on booking class F J Y
E/F returns F an J seats maps.

It shows 1 seat preselected in F (13 unallocated), 39 unallocated in J.

In actual fact, I reckon your upgrade chances are very good!

This would gel with the F6 / J9 I was seeing yesterday. But now we are at F1/J3, so it seems a bit at-odds :-)

If you check the AA code-share, you can see a lot more F seats allocated, so I suspect that F is nearly full.

Hopefully! Checked with someone who has access to some internal QANTAS staffing tool and it is also showing F1 / J3 (and several QF staff waitlisted), so I suspect upgrade chances aren't good. Will see in a few days I suppose.

Recently Qantas seem to more and more to perceive any seat, including those in F/J as saleable for a price - this price gets lower as the flight approaches.

The Sold Out facet of WHY tells me they have booked many more seats in the economy cabin than the aircraft actually has and are expecting to upgrade quite a few.

YMMV on this of course - other factors may come in to play. (Apologies in advance if I have gotten your hopes up and your upgrade does not come though.)

FWIW you can't purchase an economy seat on QF73 on the 1/4/09

J/F are available, both less than 5 seats in each fare class

I wonder if an aircraft change has resulted in a reduced number of seats available, so some lucky Y passengers may end up with nicer seats?

The F & J Seat maps are pacific config.

AnonymousCoward indicated C/M/T was showing a seatmap for coach.

What row does WHY start in? What are the first 6 rows?

1st row of Y is 34

(keeping a daily eye on QF73 as I am flying this sector in a couple of weeks and am considering trying to change to J (points booking))

Here's an interesting one (to me!).

Flight to HKG coming up in about a week (5 Mar QF127 SYD-HKG). 5 F cabin seats marked as allocated. All First classes Zero'd out.

RC F0 A0 J9 C9 D9 I2 B9 H9 K9 M9 L8 V8 S8 N5 Q6 O5 XC E0

ExpertFlyer can't show Y seat map, but Checkmytrip can (?). Expertflyer also doesn't show any Y bucket...

If I check QF128 HKG-SYD on the same day (I'm guessing plane does the turnaround?) - No seats allocated in F, 0 availability again:

RC F0 A0 J9 C9 D9 I8 B2 H2 K2 M2 L2 V2 S2 NC QC OC XC E0

Seatmap for F and J showing, Y not available.

I'm betting on the plane being substituted for a 2 class 747. Anyone agree or disagree?

Here's the OPs flight this morning:

RC F1 A1 J1 C1 D1 I1 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 VC SC NC QC OC XC E0

And still 45 premium seats unallocated ...

I'm betting it's oversold in WHY again and Qantas are looking to sell F/J "Seat"s for WHY prices ...

I have seen this trend more and more this year ...

I'm hoping you're right. But it's a bit hard to sell Y if it's at Y=0? Unless there are TAs that have Y inventory available, or QF is selling them via other channels?

Edit: CMT now showing that all Y seats are "occupied", so I think oversold Y is looking more and more likely. My seat is still showing as being in Y. Hopefully that will change on Sunday :-)

But what if you believe you may have one spare seat in F? The chances of selling it may be considered low, so what not 'sell' the capacity to who comes first with an F/A/J/C/D/I booking any revenue for that seat would be generally better than none.

In this case, Y has reduced to nothing. I would say Qantas have sold more seats on this aircraft in that actually in all classes combined.

Been watching EF every day or so. J has slowly crept up again over the past few days to J=7 and two extra economy seats (N=2) became available a couple of days ago.
That said, seems to be plenty of unallocated J seats, so hopefully upgrade request will come through, as op-up is probaby look a bit less likely.

That said, for the return trip my attempt to sample PE has been foiled again. Due to equipment change, it seems I've been moved to J. Definately not complaining about that :)

I was told last night in the SIN Flounge when i was looking for a better seat that QF10 was oversold, EF and CMT showing F0, J2 or F0, J0 depending on time and W5 Y2 B2.
So it may not have been over sold or they expected no-show's.
In any case when i did my walk around i did not see a free whY seat.

Sadly no Op-Up last night. :( Still 6hrs in whY is ok compared to the 12hrs SIN-LHR that half the flight would have come from.

Seat maps for F and J showing, W and Y not.
