General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

That's one of the reasons that there is at least one trial of vaccinating children.

Another reason is that if too many adults reject the vaccine, vaccinating children could be needed to reach herd immunity.
Though isn't it mainly those teenagers that are older than 16 that behave like adults with the virus.
Younger children are mainly asymptomatic with low viral loads and a lesser risk of transmission.

It would probably only be important for herd immunity if we were somewhere close to it, but not quite there from adult vaccinations I would suspect. There may be low risk for children catching and spreading the virus, but it's still not zero risk.

The government I suspect will hold off on making a final decision as to whether vaccinating children is necessary for as long as possible.

Yes, probably need to wait for an announcement, advising that an announcement is to be announced. 🤔

So by chance Pfizer and Moderna held their trials at an optimal time to achieve such a high efficacy.

It’s probably impossible to get information on the effect on transmission/spread.

But they could only know that in hindsight which is why the best evidence is real world vaccination and evidence for UK and AZ is more relevant.

The managed AZ suspension news, was light in reporting rare cases of clots in the vessels draining blood from the brain (CVST) and unreasonable rare distribution. I recall women under 55 (esp nurses), seem more likely to get MS or MND , causes that are not well understood, and poorly diagnosed early. It would be interesting to run a report and test this hypothetical against un-diagnosed existing conditions. If so the vaccine is safe and not at fault. Otherwise DU exposed soldiers and Fukishima men might show increased issues - but did not?
My oh my, bit of common ground in there.

Whew, and gosh, isn't this lucky, especially for all those wanting the Australian produced AZ stuff manufactured and distributed yesterday ...

Therapeutic Goods Administration approves AstraZeneca for local manufacturing

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has granted approval to AstraZeneca for its COVID-19 vaccine to be manufactured in Australia.

The TGA approved the local manufacture of the vaccine on the eve of “phase 1B” in which six million Australians, including older people and those with underlying medical conditions, will be eligible for a jab.

It follows weeks of frustration over the slow rollout of imported doses that had been approved by the TGA on February 16.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the manufacturing approval meant the commonwealth could forge ahead with its national vaccination strategy that relied on the assumption it could use 50 m doses of locally-made AstraZeneca.

Fantastic advance results from the long awaited US trial of Oxford-AZ. More detail to come over the next week I am sure.

Advanced trial data from a U.S. study on the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine shows it is 79% effective, the company announced Monday in long-awaited research that may answer some questions about the shot's effectiveness in older populations.

AstraZeneca said its experts also identified no safety concerns related to the vaccine, including a rare blood clot that was identified in Europe. Experts found no increased risk of clots among the more than 20,000 people who got at least one dose of the AstraZeneca shot.

...

In a statement, AstraZeneca said its COVID-19 vaccine had a 79% efficacy rate at preventing symptomatic COVID and was 100% effective in stopping severe disease and hospitalization. Investigators said the vaccine was effective across all ages, including older people — which previous studies in other countries had failed to establish.

Where the EU has exported vaccines.

And it's hoped for time line.

Apparently Guardian Live blog is reporting that a stockpile of 29 million doses was located in Europe.
“An inspection took place this weekend at the Anagni plant and uncovered a stock of 29m doses. The destination for these doses still needs to be clarified,” the official at the French presidency said, noting that if doses were for export, they could be blocked.”

And no word from EU about sending 1 million doses to PNG.

Sending the doses out of locally produced supply here would delay our rollout by about a week or so. It's understandable that this early in our rollout we'd much rather use the overseas supply that's being blocked to help out our neighbour.

Oh, so females shouldn't get it? I see.....
Not sure where I said that?
I was refering to the fact that the female pollie/ex pollie got it to encourage women to get it, I don't see how having some irrelevant female pollie/ex pollie getting the jab is going to encourage women to get it.
It's just a poor jusitifation for queue jumping.

I don't see how a few politicians getting the jab is going to cause massive delays for those in high priority groups. The downside risks are low and the potential upside from inspiring confidence in vaccines is significant.

If the politicians promoted the vaccine but were unwilling to take it themselves they'd be seen to be hypocrites.

...and get ready for your cough COVID swab as reported here and here o_O
With today's QLD COVID community transmission, McGowan's afternoon media announcement is cough COVID swabs for all incoming passengers through Perth Airport, backdated to last week. Just to be sure, and to keep all Western Australian's safe.
