A330s what to do with ?

i get your point though that eventually it could get to that stage for an airline if they are selling flights a year in advance and they get wiped out in the interim. I don't think anyone is suggesting that could be on the cards for virgin at least not currently?

well in that case they would be trading insolvent. If they sell seats for a flight and don't fly the plane they have to have the liquidity to refund the fares
that all depends on their bankers . Airlines for the past hundred years have sold seats on flights & then in no position to refund. The $ have gone.

right now, every international airline in the world at risk of closing down.

Domestic airlines in OZ & USA are probably going to be ok, but if pandemic hits, no one will be flying anywhere.

Could Virgin for example, cast Virgin International adrift ?
Presumably. Virgin International is a separate company, with its own ownership structure, its own AOC, etc.
Wouldn't think it likely though.

the same could apply to Qantas, if things get really bad. Not sure why anyone would think Qantas is immune.

No one thought a little virus in China could develop into a pandemic either.

Your question was could Virgin International be cut adrift, That was what I answered.
I made no claim whatsoever about Qantas.

you said you wouldn't think it likely that VA Int would be cast adrift.

Many airlines right now are in survival mood. Many were before Corona came along

if -> when. Fixed that for you.

Realistically, it's a technical definition. It is going to end up being a pandemic as no vaccine is going to be available for ~18 months. The question simply becomes how it is managed (at a government/business/individual level) rather than forecasting the death of all international air travel.

I'd still be curious as to where the data source exists for how the a330s leases are 'top dollar' - i don't disbelieve it but is any of that data public ?

reliable VA source re lease costs.

IAG predicting many other airlines will fail this year.

Interesting article sorry if already posted.

I would argue that the 77Ws are the only ones needing replacing (plus 1 or 2 for HND / enabling daily LAX-MEL), whilst the A330s could be returned to lessor (Scurrah have to pay for early lease termination if he wants the replacements earlier) and easily be replaced with the MAX10s.

As pointed out by others earlier, VA still has the 'deferred' MAX order which they could use to replace the MAX8s with 787s (may also be funded through buying back VA's 4x 77Ws) if required, along with deferring the MAX10s (again) even further depending on VA's financial situation in 12-24 months from now.

Transcon a330 planes grounded? Just had my a330 business class flight switched to a 737 and can't find any a330 flying over to Perth around 29th March.

Makes sense in the current climate but not pleased as I'd taken a longer indirect route to ensure "the business" on the way home

On March 29th I’m still seeing 2x MEL-PER and 1x SYD-PER on the A330

XFJ has departed MEL and left Australia this morning...
