New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

One has to wonder if we had to provide proof of ID before boarding domestic flights, would this have occurred?

Having said that, Mr Andrews's statement that they hadn't thought of this occurring really takes the cake. Who the heck is in charge over there - one would think that an ability to think outside the box and look at a "worst-case scenario" (i.e., Kiwis board a flight from the state in which they land and then travel onwards to MEL) was *not* outside the realm of possibility?

However, it is not only the Victorian government that should be held to account; the Australian government should be as well. Anyone thinking that this could never happen is as naive as it comes - guess they were drinking the "Bubble Cool-Aid" and the Covidiot effect took hold . . .

Watch this travel bubble evaporate faster than the ones my youngest niece loves blowing around the house.

Hypothetically what’s to stop a bunch of people flying into SYD from NZ, undergoing the appropriate health screening and checks, renting a car from Avis and driving to Melbourne?

Absolutely nothing, I reckon.

This is an absolute total over reaction. There is absolutely zero need for any of these travellers to spend any type of time in NSW before moving on.

Well, they probably have done so already, for all that we know, or care. Maybe even Hertz. 😀

Obviously not. He says this at 1:51 in video.

Sure has! Over the last week and ever since the NZ bubble has been announced, plus said at today’s press conference as well. Plenty of Victorian / Kiwi cross pollination ;) So they will be very keen to join once their restrictions end and Ms Arden approves them of course :)

Why does NZ approval even matter? Isn't it straight quarantine - no ifs and buts.

Good point what do they care. I suppose only
if it becomes an equal two way street they would become involved. But that probably can’t happen until our domestic borders are open anyway...... so messy....

I was under the impression as part of the Bubble agreement they are not allowed to enter any other state or territory apart from NSW or NT?
If these people had tried to come to SA or any other state they would have also been refused entry.

Or even flying to ABX and taking a taxi across to Wodonga. IIRC there are no checks on people entering Victoria.

What has the prime Minster had to say? Anyone heard anything?

With several mystery cases in NSW and number of actives cases at 49, whilst all NZ active cases currently in quarantine after travelling from O/S, it might be better for VIC to not spend any time in NSW before moving on .... both very small risks, but the NSW still marginally more risky.

They are only permitted to enter Australia via NSW or the NT. In doing so they are exempt from the 14 day hotel quarantine. Whatever they do after entering the country would be based on the current State border restrictions with travelers from NSW or the NT. In practical terms it’s NSW as SYD is currently the International entry point for them.

Thanks for that. For some reason I was under the impression they weren’t to leave NSW

I hadn’t given much thought to it at all since my state QLD is not allowed in the NZ bubble (so far), but I actually thought similar to you and speaking to friends yesterday they also thought the kiwis could only fly into Syd then only go into NT and ACT being the only states as part of the bubble to date. Clearly that is wrong but just goes to show there is a lot of confusion around!

Just heard that 24 New Zealanders arrived in Perth from Sydney and are now in quarantine! In addition to the ones who went to Melbourne. I would have thought there'd be checks in place to stop this happening.

If only our interstate politicians realised that once they exit immigration in Sydney the NZ'ers arriving under the bubble are effectively people in NSW. As long as the same controls apply as anyone who has been in NSW in the previous 14 days, then I'm not sure what the issue is, especially for states that have quarantine arrangements for people arriving from NSW. All that it means, is these people only have to go through 1x quarantine rather than 2!

And people seriously think that travel will be opened up in 2021! With this much fuss about a few dozen people coming from a country with 0 community cases and excellent response when they do get a case, what hope is there to ever open up to anywhere, even like Singapore or Hong Kong with very low levels in the community, let alone Europe or the US, even with a 90% effective vaccine?

I just feel it will give McGowan more reasons not to open our border up, if he can't trust "those eastern staters"
