I’m in Brissy so perhaps more progressive but we have branches in Cairns. Basically Cairns might as well be in lockdown, there is no one there, even for this time of year. Period. It’s probably one of the most reliant regional areas on tourism and they are deserted. Intrastate tourism is basically an emergency IV line.

So yes no virus and not much else either :( No balance.

I have contacts from Cairns and Townsville and they are saying FFS what are AP and JY doing!!!!!

It might be consistent, but still a disgrace IMHO that he could not attend his own father's funeral.

At the very least everyone should be entitled (with appropriate precautions) to attend your own parents funeral. My guesstimate, for 90% of Australians in that age bracket where parents are dying, that would mean at most a spouse plus 1-4 offspring. That is not a large group and not unmanageable.

I completely understand with having rules for not having a 100 second cousins and the friend of a friend, ex work mate et al.

Yet, in the early days of first lockdown in Qld- when funeral numbers were restricted to 10 - JY gave an exemption for the funeral of an indigenous elder - and allowed 80 people to attend! So it appears race is an issue too!

Literally every day there are more and more tragic cases of people dying, people missing that last moment with loved ones, unable to see terminally ill sick kids, the lists goes on - because of these border restrictions. Thats before you even get to the economic impact.

This is all over our local news bulletins now and I think people up here are beginning to feel a bit dirty about it....

At the moment I would argue that she looks spineless and weak right now anyway. It’s never seems to be her decision it’s always someone else’s...

According to her she’s apparently being bossed around by Dr Young - who is making all these horrible decisions, not her.

So if she took some ownership back and showed some leadership now in working with the other premiers and Feds on this issue that is spiralling our of control, it might actually make her look stronger, more compassionate...

But she may have to fire Dr Young first if Dr Young is *truly* the one bossing Anna around.... which I honestly don’t really believe...
During a pandemic, you want doctors making the decisions, not politicians.

One question doesn’t seem to being asked in the Sarah Caisip case, why did they not just delay the funeral till she was out of quarantine?

There is more than just the QLD border crisis happening for those not in QLD, we also have ministers resigning every couple of days...!

Queensland Labor's ministerial exodus has created 11th-hour election headaches for party

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, losing one senior minister in a day may be regarded as a misfortune, losing two looks like carelessness.

The surprise retirements of Mines Minister Anthony Lynham and State Development Minister Kate Jones on Thursday capped off what was a ragged last parliamentary sitting day for the Palaszczuk Government before the October 31 election.

Both frontbenchers were viewed by their colleagues as good performers — Ms Jones in particular will be missed as one of the Government's strongest debaters on the floor of the legislative assembly.

While the LNP can make jibes about rats leaving a sinking ship, there is a danger these 11th-hour departures could turn into a more significant setback if Labor doesn't manage what will be a rushed preselection process — and the party's recent record hasn't been good.

I can only but guess that someone has determined that you won't get covid cases in a hospital if no-one is allowed to visit. (oh, aside from '000s hospital staff and contractors of all flavours going in and out every day and mixing in the community)
Absolutely ridiculous. As I have said here a few times. If you have a compassionate exemption in Tasmania but in hotel Quarantine you will be escorted to a hospital or a funeral just wearing a mask but then back to the hotel.

And yesterday Tasmania took the 3 SEQ LGA hotspot status off so Tasmanians coming back from Brisbane no longer need to be in hotel quarantine but self isolate at home.
As well as that those Tasmanians in hotel quarantine can spend the rest of the time now at home. Will get a refund of unused hotel time.

The really ridiculous thing in QLD is that Dr.Young has listed all NSW and Victorian LGAs as Covid hotspots even though some have never had a case,Many satisfy her test of no community transmission for 28 days but will not be taken off the list.So Dr. Young check what the Tasmanians are doing.
Even more ridiculous Sydney Harbour has been listed as a hotspot as well.

Don’t forget Qld designated the nations capital ACT as a hotspot. I’m sure the Fed pollies and staffers got an exemption on return from Parlianent

How could I forget it.Another bit of evidence that Dr.young just isn't up to the job.

"Canberra is defined as a hotspot because it is in the middle of New South Wales, we know there are cases around them," Dr Young said.
"The other part is, you might remember there were a lot of cases in Batemans Bay, and a lot of Canberrans have weekend residences they go to in Batemans Bay. We have seen it happen. Unfortunately, for people who live in Canberra, they are deemed as being in a hotspot, need to be managed as such."

Be interesting to watch and see the effect of a carefully coordinated industry attack on the QLD governments irrational border closure decisions - led by Bain/VA2 and Flight Centre - both big QLD businesses here but also Helloworld and Qantas joining in....

It’s going to go for four weeks... it’s a sustained campaign and going to be a bumpy ride to the election!

Excellent! I still haven't completely given up on my planned Noosa holiday in November

Except in Victoria and its a curfew :) <ducks> And better I think the doctors giving professional advice, and the elected politicians taking, and being accountable for, the decisions.

It doesn’t really matter what advice doctors give if it isn’t taken (WA, TAS going against CHO risk advice).

But back on topic, there is serious questioning today in the talkback media about the QLD premiers interpretation of what advice she can and can’t take and rumours are brewing of a big backflip coming on NSW/ACT borders - maybe even pre election.

The QLD health minister made a fool of himself this AM attacking the impending Bain/Virgin, Qantas et al campaign against the irrational closures, by saying Qantas should first look at themselves charging 10’s of thousands of dollars flying Australians hope internationally right now......?

Ummmm which International QF routes flying are you referring to minister? He had to retract.

It’s the law in Queensland that the decisions must be made by the CHO. Premier has no ability to intervene.
What to the LNP plan to do if they win? Will they put a new law through parliament to allow politicians to override the CHO. After all, Dutton has been so impartial in his decisions wrt immigration, especially if you are a young blond au pair working for one of your mates.

Interstingly, the QLD AMA came out this morning completely supporting the CHO and complaining about the Libs bullying.

It’s interesting and not really related to Qld election but the AMA has had some dubious form in this whole debate, they have been very heavily involved in the WA debacle and actually have gone against the advice of the WA CHO. They seem to be on a different agenda but that is a whole new topic.

I think all Anna / or the next premier can do is really use their influence to get a more broadly aligned consensus on the advice they are getting.... and that is already starting to happen as the QLD Cho is being ‘asked’ to work with the Feds a lot more closely to help with her management style.... We clearly have a problem here as medical advice is not being explained or justified or vetted, just happens to be in line with the state elections campaign slogan...

There’s a few people with “a problem“. For example, Matthias Cormann taking a leaf out of Trump’s playbook calling the Queensland premier, “nasty”, amongst other things. The AMA abhors the potential violent trolls being used against doctors. I find that quite reasonable. And that the feds are the last word on management style is somewhat laughable.

Source? Relevance?
this morning

The Australian Medical Association’s Queensland branch president, Chris Perry, said the group supported Young’s scientific decisions during the Covid-19 crisis.

“We’re an evidence-based organisation and we follow what the chief health officer says,” he told reporters on Sunday. “What the chief health officer in Queensland says goes, it’s the law.”

Perry said there had been many “stressful” personal attacks on Young over her health advice to the government.

He said the criticism had mostly been by online trolls but he acknowledged the federal government also had a ”different point if view”.

“Back off. Leave her alone. We think this chief health officer is doing a great job,” he said. “We’re doing a very, very good job in this state. Probably because Queensland politicians are listening very carefully to a very well qualified physician.“
