Platinum Charge Companion Card change

I've held the charge since 18' and it's always been an online application:
Comes up for me now too. I stand corrected :)

PS: Remember now. It was the A/C card I had to faff about with

Hmm. Current Charge/Reserve cardholder here.

Got the Charge Card 3 or 4 years back (when they for a limited time offered welcome bonus points even to existing members with credit cards). Back then, Reserve companion card is a hidden gem and I only learnt it from other forums so I had to call up to request for an application form. Never thought about going through another credit check at that time though.

I am sharing this information as there appears to be some interesting development yet conflicting information - I think the thread started with a warning that new Reserve cards would not be eligible for the A$400 travel credit but now it appears both the card and the travel credit are being actively promoted...

Really have to monitor closely on the development...

I couldn't see the travel credit when I clicked through Quattro's link

Hi - can you indicate where the travel credit for the Reserve is being actively promoted? (I had a quick look on AMEX site and couldn't see it) --- I've always found this travel credit to be somewhat strange as a key perk, b/c my memory is that it was not proactively advertised when looking at the Plat card itself and relatively easy to overlook (I think I found out about it from AFF too), and it doesn't appear to be widely promoted, which is why I think a number of us have given quite a bit of weight to being informed that AMEX may be starting to not offer this credit to new companion card holders.

I was told today by My Amex RM that they've removed the $400 TC on the Reserve since 1 July 2020. If you can still get it, go ahead and get it. Otherwise, probably not worth the effort to set up another account anymore.

Thanks for confirming that - interesting, b/c I still think the credit is referred to in the card's T&Cs (dated early 2019 though), but I haven't looked at them closely

What's people's thoughts re whether they are likely to remove the $400 travel credit as a card benefit for existing customers in the short to medium term? I'm just a bit concerned that removing it for new companion card holders is a soft first step to expanding this reduction in benefit in future). I haven't held the card long enough to know how AMEX usually plays this --- do existing card holders tend to keep existing benefits for a long time, or do initial changes, like removing it for new applicants tend to be a sign of changes to come? (I'm assuming the latter unfortunately).

Historically when Amex devalue a card benefit, it applies to new card members first before existing card members getting a mail about the change, normally it would take effect for existing card holders within 6-12 months max.

I hope covid-19 means they have put a pause on this change for existing members, otherwise I really can't see the benefit of retaining a card with such a high AF unless Amex keeps giving out promos such as the double points promotion, which I think would have cost them more than the $400 travel credit.

Oh that's a shame :(. I was going to apply for the Platinum Charge sometime later this year or early next year.
You need to find a friend who has the card already so that both you and he can benefit from a wadge of bonus FF Points.

Before I applied for my Reserve card, I was told I could use my Edge card (with $200 travel credit) as a companion card for the Charge card. I wonder if this will still be the case if/when they remove the $400 tc from the Reserve card.

To be fair, that's a good point. Edge card is still a public card so I'll switch to that when they drop the reserve TC.
