A380 vs 777

Hi All,

I understand that with the current madness currently going on round the world this topic will be hypothetical but why the hell not!

Looking for book from Canberra (CBR) to Newcastle (NCL), UK for next June (2021).

Will be using QFF points and ideally Emirates as they go Direct from DXB to NCL which means not messing around with those crazy londoners! By the time I book should hopefully have enough for Business for whole trip, assuming I can make another 40,000 before I book in Jul / Aug when they open.

Wondering for thoughts on best route to pick in the hopes of getting in a A380 rather than a 777, or at least a 1-2-1 config 777. Dont mind where I have to go via within AU first.

Many of the EK services to Australia are operated by the A380. If you look at the Qantas award booking engine that shows you the aircraft flying.

EK doesn't have any 1-2-1 configurations in business class on their 777s. Their 'new' business class is still 2-2-2, just full flat instead of angled.

if you book a J class on 380 and they change to a 777 I somehow get the feeling that QFF awards would be first in the line to get bumped to Y or is that just me being paranoid ? and do you have recourse in that situation to request a different day with a 380?

Not necessarily. Lots of things can affect who gets downgraded. Checking in super early (on line if possible) could secure your seat over a paid customer. But if you are bumped you can certainly ask for another flight on another day. This should be granted free of charge.

If you are leaving the Uk and downgraded you'll be entitled to 75% of the fare by way of compensation.

It depends how urgent your need to travel is, and how flexible you are. If you absolutely must be on a particular flight for an event, you might have to accept the downgrade. If you can wait, you'll generally be accommodated in your paid cabin at another time. If you are aware of the downgrade in advance of the day of travel you can usually make appropriate arrangements ahead of time. If on the day of departure you might have a trip back home to wait for the new flight.

Thanks again, quite reassuring, my work is very flexible and my starting point is about 30 mins by light rail from my folks place back in the uk, I'd feel pretty confident once I get a boarding card in the uk for the DXB to SYD flight that it would be respected.

It's unlikely they're going to downgrade you mid journey. And departing the UK you'd be up for a 75% refund of the sector in the event something came up that required you to travel on that flight (and not wait).

TBH, a mid-flight downgrade on an award ticket has never been something at the forefront of my mind, it's not common.

Cheers Lemon Party (lol at the nick) not too worried about the one to NCL as thats going towards the day time / will be getting back to family, friends etc which always keeps you going.

I can never sleep in economy so usually Canberra to Newcastle and stay up till the night on arrival is often 40-50 hours awake, if i can sneak in some J class sleep at any point in the journey it'll be a massive win lol
