You can buy policies that commence outside australia, but why not just get a new policy starting on the day you depart? If this is an annual policy, check with your provider but it might roll over.

Maybe you should communicate with your insurer first.
I’m just a bit concerned that if you were to buy a new annual policy today that it wouldn’t respond to the virus issues in the same way that your current policy might...

If it's the same provider, does it not roll over? So continuous cover?
Hope so . I may need to check previous insurances as to whether we have rolled over on dates.

OP are you intending not renew policy for following year?
Nope definitely renewing.

But would a renewal (do they exist ) still have the same terms and conditions ?

YMMV but if it was me and if possible I would let it roll over to establish continuity of cover so they can't say you took it out after January 2020 and therefore any hidden exclusions start applying.

It isn't due for a while just was wondering what the requirement as regards to physical presence
Thank you .

For an annual policy rolling over, one would think that physical presence shouldn't matter. New policy purchases are often based on physical presence n Australia, with special policies you need to take out if you are already overseas.
