Excuse me if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I'm new to this site and whole process!

My mum is looking to book an award seat last minute from BNE to LAX using points. The amount needed for an economy ticket is 96,000 according to Qantas website. She currently has only got 83,489 left in her account.

Is it possible to purchase the top up points and then book this award seat? I read something about not exceeding 15% of the total points required for the award flight. So if I'm correct I could purchase 13,000 points for her and use them to book the award seat, without exceeding 15%????

I'm trying to figure this out, it's all very last minute and I'm not used to the Qantas frequent flyer system. Their website show's an award seat on Dec 25th but if I don't grab it soon I'm sure it will be gone.

Thanks for any input, I'm very naive about this whole process
