The Card Network saga:

Just encountered a problem when trying to use The Active Card's that I converted for online use.

I've tried to use them to make a purchase at The Athletes Foot (the store I converted them to use at). I enter the details into the credit card slot (the converted cards wont work in the gift card payment option available online) and tried to pay but of course it wasn't accepted because the total of the purchase is more than $100 and I was using a converted $100 card. I knew the total was more than $100. But I'd hoped that the system may recognise this, take the $100 and give me options as to how to pay the residual amount.

There appears no way to purchase anything for more than the face value of one of these cards. This seems to be a serious flaw with these converted cards. To use them I'd need to ensure that the entire purchase was exactly $100 or less than $100 and potentially I could get stuck with a small residual that I couldn't use such as $2 or $5 because the store sells nothing online that equals exactly this residual amount.

Anyone else encountered this at The Athletes Foot or any of the other online stores that you can convert these cards to?

Anyone know if you can use the converted cards in store and have them enter the credit card number directly into their terminal?

I've sent a message to the Card Network outlining the issue.

Don’t you just have to tell the merchant you are paying $100 on one card and the balance on another. That way they will set the first transaction through the terminal to only be $100....?

edit: oh sorry, I just read you were processing this online
 
Even worse, I tried to spend exactly $100 at booktopia but couldn't because they debit 7c to confirm the card is legit prior to processing the order (why, I don't know). Might be worth us all pursuing a refund on the basis that these cards do not operate as advertised.

UPDATE:

Decided to try my luck and took the converted gift cards into a physical The Athletes Foot store today. Explained my situation and got a sympathetic manager. He indicated that there had been a lot of people bringing in physical 'The Active' gift cards and they were unable to process the card in store. Seems to be a significant issue apparently.

I asked if they could try to put through my converted Mastercards via their terminal as a manual credit card payment. They first said that they'd try the physical gift card. I knew that this wouldn't work as I'd already taken the balance and converted it to the Mastercard and they'd already indicated the problems with the physical cards in any case. But I let them try. This failed. They then tried to process to converted Mastercards manually ($100 at a time) and this worked!

Seems that this may be a work around for those stuck with the converted cards.

But I'd also suggest that people think very seriously about purchasing this range of cards again. They clearly have massive problems - not just limited to converting to online usage. Definitely not worth the 10% savings made when originally purchasing these cards.

I still have 3 more non converted The Active cards. Not sure what I'll do with those just yet.

I’ve looked at your card and can see that you were able to use your cards instore.



Please note the consolidation of the gift cards and split payment processing online is something we’re working towards with our retail partners and we hope to have this for our customers soon.

So from that I'd take it that it's impossible to combine the cards to spend online at present and that they are aware of the serious problems with their cards and things may improve in the future. Not a very inspiring response. I'd repeat my warning about these cards. Definitely never purchasing again.

With only 1000 points the math is marginal. In saying that, i will probably still get a few to go towards the min spend on one of the cards.

A word of caution on these.

As with the last time this offer was running the new style of Only1Visa cards (with the cardboard tab covering the bar code) did not trigger bonus points.
