Bushfires 2019/2020!

I was thinking of this statement, “we think it is best to adjust our travels through Australia ...”. And, apparently Americans are being told most of the country is on fire.
That’s the thing isn’t it. Media keeps comparing the size of the fires to countries esp Europe. Making the thought process ‘the entire country’ rather than a large area of a huge continent.

Off topic: But we booked and paid for a holiday in Sth Korea in 2015.

As we were about to depart the MERS virus struck and friends pulled out - we went anyway. We ended up as the only two on the tour and had personalised service from the tour guide/driver. He was amazed that at all the main tourist spots there were no queues whatsoever and we just walked in and wandered around hardly encountering anyone. Turns out more Americans were shot on home soil than MERS confirmed cases the couple of weeks while we were there.

If you look at TripAdvisor there are numerous queries/worries about trips to parts of Australia that have not had any fires at all. The sort of pictures/graphics in Serfty's post have certainly been misleading a lot of travelers.

A friend took a day trip to Braidwood yesterday and commented on the Mustangs and other cars.

A convoy of CO2 emitting vehicles heading to (and supporting) bushfire ravaged areas. Ironic given some of the rhetoric around causal links .
That said I am a fan, I love old cars and the folk who keep them running.

Seem 1 Armoured Regiment is on kangaroo island, all over my facebook feed. Yep, they're not army reserve. So was the reserve mobilised, or was that just more advertising.

I can't see why regular ADF forces and Reserve personnel can't both have been deployed to help in the response, I think someone posted a lengthy description of full time and reserve actions last week on a thread here somewhere. There are other places in Australia that are still active or on clean-up phases outside of Kangaroo Island.

Heard on the weekend someone calling in from KI to say the Reservists were doing a great job in some activity - can’t remember what it was now - so not sure what your fb feed is doing. Guess they can’t be everywhere on the island at once.

Paywalled but it was from a few days ago. Oh yeah, they were setting up the ADF portable water supply to the Island and distributing it to people without water.

I do appreciate that you're both going to support the government regardless of how badly they perform.

The government clearly said they were calling up the reserve because the regular army wasn't able to help.

my fb feed includes the RAAC, with posts from current and past members of the Army. Guess I'm lucky to get info straight from the source rather than behind paywalls.

Talking of pay walls, in the Aus today stated that Rudd called up the reservists after Black Saturday. So, it seems it wasn’t the first time. Also behind the same pay wall was this report, “ominous sign at the National Museum of Australia on Saturday: “Due to air quality, the Garden of Australian Dreams is closed.” In CBR.

VIc , could you please elaborate on this poor performance, what did they do wrong ?

Good grief. Your initial posts were about the fact that the reservists were called in without due process, you then queried whether the reservists were actually being deployed or if it was a furphy, I provide evidence that the reservists were deployed both anecdotal from people on KI and a photo, and you think it’s all about whom you consider I vote for? Give me a break. I have no idea what your agenda is here.
FB is only as good as you want FB to be.

That’s quite reassuring that the reservists will be called up by any flavour Government and that they will work together with the States. But Gosh, I hope Rudd followed due process when he allowed the reservists to respond to that horrific emergency.

I'm currently cruising south from Santiago towards the Antarctic on a Seabourn cruise which has LOTS of Americans. Almost every one of them after knowing I'm Australian has said I'm so sorry for your country. Amazingly people are more worried about the impact on animals rather than humans

Talk in the Australian today about passing laws to get around the constitutional issues that come in to play with Bushfire and other emergencies. Similar to Terrorist laws that would allow the Federal Govt to act without having to be invited.

I think that is one of the issues to be canvassed in a Royal Commission. It could be a good idea to hear from all parties as unintended consequences come in to play at knee jerk actions. There could be many other arrangements up for discussion otherwise.

Well, this has been sad that it wasn't done properly for the badly affected ...
Government apologises for bushfire payment bungle

I am sure the opposition will not go on the attack over that particular bungle. Something dependent on the machinations of government, rather than the direction or policy of government can equally happen to any particular side of politics, no matter how competent the minister in charge is or isn't.

This is not from behind a paywall and is available to anybody.

And in case you are wondering I get my information from Senator Jim Molan who without publicity moved his office to the South Coast of NSW and is helping co ordinate the activities of the community volunteers,RFS and ADF personnel.
