Not good enough

QF do not treat their top tier (WP1) that much better than the rest of the bunch.

At least QF platinums have much better lounge options (both domestic and international)

For me it comes down to a trade off between economy X and lounges for platinum pax of the competing carriers. If I didn't need the extra leg room I'd be jumping ship in a heartbeat, as any one can see the writing on the wall for virgin.

I’m VA Platinum top 1% and just flew In J on my birthday to Auckland. Didn’t get personalised welcome or any acknowledgment.
I know it’s first world problem but this is sort stuff that would make me jump the ship
I can't even believe that you even thought that this was so important that you would bother to take the time to type about it let alone think that it was important enough to waste the time of the rest of us reading it.

Agreed. IMHO the 'welcome back' when they read the boarding pass at the door seems fine, but personalised greeting at the seat seems cringeworthy.
The way I look at it is that I'm one of a few hundred people putting bums on seats to go somewhere - I'm not there to be the star of the show nor be a celebrity.

If Bion wants everyone to know who he is when he flies then he had better get himself a reality TV show to star in.

And even if it was your birthday, there's a very good chance you're not the only one on the plane: Understanding the Birthday Paradox – BetterExplained

While you might be the only one that also had status, you'd be one of a few birthdays each flight. For any meaningful (active) recognition of this it would need to be a formal process - if it's a tickbox, it's a bit less special, isn't it?

Wife and I ( both VA WPs) and 15yo daughter, flew SYD-HKG back in Feb in Y.
On 3 occasions, we had the CSM and 2 other FA's come up and introduce themselves to us and asking if there was anything they could do for us, just ask. Daughter and wife joked about it, and thought it was a little embarrassing.

Ive always said, the seat and status confers certain benefits but these may be official and unofficial.

Its the unofficial ones that people seem to have a strong expectation.

Its in the AFF culture to try and get as many benefits as possible, especially the unofficial ones.
However any unofficial benefit is in the gift of the airline, CSM, FA and there should be no expectations at all.

Try and get it but without expectation is the correct approach

I include cross cabin toilet access as an unofficial benefit.😇. Similarly toilet restrictions to outside cabin toilet seeker is not an official benefit😇😇

I'm another one of those people who switched to VA (Plat + Plat gifting) in hope of something better (and following QFF LTG, what next? - in days pre LTP QFF).
The VA grass is not greener.
As one who is resident in more than one country I thought I'd try BAEC.
There is no green grass (Only J lounges)

SQ in F often use my name when addressing me after I’m seated. They are reading it of course off their sheet, and say it fairly discreetly which is good for anonymity. I look on it as being polite and respectful.

I would be to shocked and embarrassed if a flight crew member said happy birthday to me on my flight.
I don't think that it would be job/job parameters to say it, truth be told.
QFi flight, AKL - BNE, the fa also greeted me by my surname, and from that list, and made copious notes, what I wanted to eat and drink, etc, I know why, its so that they have a back up if things go wrong.
OT, even at work, even if I knew someon'e birthday, I would not go and congratulate them ((harassment comes to mind)).

And just how do you say "Happy Birthday" to someone who <appears to be self centered> like the OP? Did he expect the whole crew including the pilots to come and sing Happy Birthday to him?

They know your name, that its your birthday, etc and other info is not hard to find.

I fear this falls under “damned if they do/don’t”. I flew QF (WP) the day before my birthday just recently. The CSM came by at least 4 times to say “happy birthday for tomorrow” which I found a bit awkward because a) the day before your birthday is not exactly notable at the best of times and b) I don’t actually celebrate my birthday so am not into having a big fuss made about it

flew TL the next day and no one said anything about it which was ideal!!

have no idea if this is something QF adds to the iPad routinely? If it is I’ll be avoiding flying with them on/near my birthday and OP might want to switch after all 😉

A little OT, but our son is SAA Platinum and they routinely provide his 16 month old daughter with a J seat to herself, FOC. That's a tangible benefit that trumps all the effusive greetings (or lack thereof) on VA and QF.

I don’t get an acknowledgement when I use my points towards a J seat for family and relos not when I use my status to guest them in
😁

I'm VA Platinum top 1% as well, always travel J. Never get welcomed onto plane by name (that seems to be reserved for MEN IN SUITS), but most times by name once service begins. Partner has received complimentary annual VP twice. Service and food much better than I remember Qantas ever being when I was WP1 before jumping ship to VA. A recent bad Qantas F experience (yet another one) has confirmed me in staying with VA/SIA.

I wouldn't be too happy either. Trouble is, where would you jump to? Qantas? i can assure you they are no better.
