QF is advertising a "sale" that isn't cheap, but worth highlighting here because some may want to travel via PER to LHR.

Its lead-in return whY fare from MEL to LHR is A$1208 return, but this is only available from 13 January to 29 February 2020, very much the wintry off season.

Charging high fares close to Christmas is understandable: it's a popular time given that and school hols, so the fare showing of A$3099 return is not overly surprising (though a huge premium compared to the fare from mid January.)

However what is high are some other dates: for instance, departing MEL in October 2020, the cheapest advertised return fare is poor value (given it's offpeak, particularly when school holidays are not on) at A$2119 return.

For some, travelling on QF9/QF10 via PER (ex MEL) will be an attraction (should these fares be available on that routing, and not just via SIN on QF35 to QF1 or returning QF2 to QF36) but compared with many other airlines, the QF fares given its downgrading of food service and other problems doesn't warrant the extra it charges.

I just purchased an $1.1k SYD to LHR Y fare, which I thought was good on QF1 and QF2. That's going in Feb.

Going back to see family, so it doesn't really matter when I go.

Anyone get one of those fares?
Says there could be $699 returns there. Hmm.

Though they are offering Americans a 100 fares at $100 each way LAX to Australia.

A small example of the "Australia tax" to which MEL_Traveller correctly refers. It isn't just QF (although its fares are the priciest), it's most international airlines.

Minor correction here, it’s QF 37 to QF1. QF35 has 6:50 connection (vs 37 with 1:40), I hope it is cheaper than either QF9 or QF37->1.
