I want to fly PE SYD->MEX return next year (1/6-8/6/20) and I see QANTAS have a PE deal for $3200 via Dallas with their 380, whereas Virgin costs around $3400 via LAX on the 777. I believe the US->MEX leg will be Economy only.

Has anyone flown these 2 routes to the US and can compare them? I need to buy 3 tickets so the $600 saving is worthwhile, but I'm Platinum status so could use the lounges and have a (probably remote) possibility of an upgrade on the Virgin flight to the US.

Both QF and VA have very good Premium Economy products. For the USA to Mexico leg, I would rate Delta above American Airlines.

If you're VA Platinum, why not go VA and aim to upgrade the trans-Pacific leg? It's not that many Velocity points from PE to J and you're only competing with other Gold/Platinum members with PE or Economy Freedom tickets. Plus, you can confirm the upgrade in advance any time that there is J reward seat availability.

Flew VA PE LAX - SYD earlier this year and was very impressed. Good food and wine choices, great service, seat width and leg-room all fine.
As a Plat, you plus one would get access to the Lounges, Business Check-in, Priority Boarding etc, etc....actually, Family Pool your status credits and you'd be a long way to retaining your Plat status from just that trip. What's that worth?

Have a great trip!

See if you can use a promo code for Virgin should work on PE

It depends on where you want to transit.
I tend to fly to Mty in Mexico once a year and have done it since moving to Aus (7 yrs) and have preferred going through DFW using AA/QF as transit and schedules work better. I don’t like AA at all but I can stand the 80 min journey rather than another 3-4 hours if going via LAX

LAX has always been more complicated and I personally dislike it. In saying that, as people suggest, have heard really positive comments on VA PE and Delta seems the best out of the big 3 US carriers.

Yeah one of the positives on the Qantas PE is that it is the longer (also a -ve) leg on PE vs VA and, as you say, you end up with a shorter leg to MEX, which is std economy.

As for where I'd like to transit, the DFW one is a very short layover (1.5 hrs). Yes I've heard some bad stories about LAX as well.

Just as a FYI and pretty sure you would be aware but as VA platinum even if you are flying delta you wouldn’t get access to the lounge in MEX as it’s operated by Aeromexico; however I believe you can access lounge through priority pass

The promo codes don't usually work if the flight is already on sale.

Also, the promo code won't work on codeshares/other airlines. Because the flight involves Delta, I believe it blocks all legs from discount.

I've flown VA PE SYD-LAX and although I can't comment on QF's product - I can say with confidence that real estate is everything long haul. The 41" pitch on VA's B777 wins over (what I've heard) the abysmal knee crushing version of Qantas Premium.

I created a formula to help me decide these conundrums: COMFORT - PRICE - CONVENIENCE

Choose your two main preferences. It will cost you the third.

Everybody has a different set of needs, but my formula helps you identify what are your main considerations - and then you are happy to reconcile that trade-off.

Happy travels :)
