General Medical issues thread

Sounds like you haven't trashed your body yet. The mortality rate of the human race is a 100%. - it will only buff out to a certain extent, and there are no trade ins available.

Die young or die old. pros and cons for each.
Here's my negativity shining through again.

Once you're dead does it matter whether you died young or old? Millions and billions of years of history and here we are worrying about our piddly random existence and run ourselves to the ground without fully realising what life is all about.

History has to be written down for it to be history.
So there's only about 6000 years of history.

Fortunately, with the internet much of what we write down on places like this may last forever (unless an Electro Magnetic Pulse blasts the servers to oblivion).

So.......keep posting.

Went back to the doctor again today.

I think my doctor is out of answers for why I am still sick, he did prescribe some more Sudafed or equivalent for my head cold.

Maybe not really that sick but my nose was running like a tap, not sure why so much was coming out.

Suggested maybe I wasn’t fit enough.

Can you get more than 1 type of cold, drinking copious amounts of water probably why my nose was running, water was being turned into snot.
Not suggesting this is the same but before 1999 I used to get the flu at least 3 times a year. I remember one year it took 3 months to shake and I was sick from July-October.

Since 1999 I've had the flu shots and have not had the flu that often but I've had plenty of colds.

A few years back I was sick twice, in February and July from memory, and each time was at least 6-8 weeks. A few times there I felt as if I would die as the breathing was also affected. I guess I'll never know what caused these episodes but somehow managed to get through them.

This year has been a good year until my recent holiday to Thailand. Felt like I developed a virus with running nose and some coughing when we arrived in Thailand and a few days later daughter had same symptoms. Thankfully wife was ok. It took close to 10 days to fully shake and to me it felt like a head cold.

No, there is oral history, that passed down the ages in story and song; it is just as valid as the written versions.

I think you are referring to Oral Tradition.

From Wikipedia
"Oral history is the collection and study of historical information about individuals, families, important events, or everyday life using audiotapes, videotapes, or transcriptions of planned interviews. "

History is where they read the hijinks going on among the pyramid builders in Egypt, and how much grain a certain merchant sold in Sumeria and how much tax he paid on it - relying on written records.

Renato

And there is the natural history with the study of rocks, fossils etc.Just ask Rooflyer how long that goes back.
Fascinating as it may be, Natural history isn't the same thing as history.

From Wikipedia,
"Natural history is a domain of inquiry involving organisms including animals, fungi and plants in their environment; leaning more towards observational than experimental methods of study. "

Whereas,
"History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning 'inquiry; knowledge acquired by investigation')[2] is the past as it is described in written documents, and the study thereof.[3][4] Events occurring before written records are considered prehistory. "

I would really like to have my cataracts done… but they are not "bad" enough yet
Swmbo had one done with some trepidation .
I warned her it would be such a revelation that she would have t'other done in a flash.
And it was so.
She was amazed at the wonderful clear colourful world she had been missing

I had quite a lot of trouble when I had mine done - just light sensitivity that went on for ages and dry weepy eyes but now they are great.

When hubby had his eyes done (replaced lense with man made), he found night driving with yellow tinted glasses really helped with the light glare and computers. Nothing special, gamers use them all the time/sold on ebay

How not bad are they though. Can you still drive at night without have light flares in your eyes?

The difference between the replaced lens eye and the eye still with the original lens is quite remarkable and I wish I didn't have to wait a month to get the other one done.

I had some trepidation at first but it really is a pain free operation. The most discomfort was having 7 lots of drops in the eye as pre op.

You might want to get a second opinion - my mother had hers assessed by an optometrist once, and was told they weren't bad enough. She had a rather hysterical discussion with her GP, who suggested a second opinion. That optometrist asked her how she drove there! Cue urgent referral for surgery under Medicare, which happened a couple of months later, one eye one day, one the next. 20/20 vision on testing the day after.

Reason the first optometrist lied about her need for surgery? She thinks it was because he wanted to refer her to his mate, who did it privately, and she refused because she couldn't afford it. Or at least, that's what she guessed, not sure if that's really true.

Once you are dead, you go into history which ironically can only be perceived by the living.
What can someone perceive of their own lives and what they have done or not done once they are dead?

Absolutely nothing unless you believe in afterlife.

Thank God for whoever invented Tramadol and Lyrica.

Without them this current trip would have been a disaster. Pop one of each in the morning and within an hour, instead hobbling around bent over, I am ready to happily climb castle walls and trudge up and down hills here in Lisbon.

Though in practice we just walk downwards till we find a Metro somewhere, and catch a train back up the hills.

Another visit to rheumatologist this week because of the palindromic arthritis that I have been suffering. Even though I was reluctant, he's put me on Chloroquine because apparently it's helpful with this condition. I'm a bit worried about the consequences for my gut but I'm going to give it a go, it's so painful when it's in any joint larger than a knuckle. Twice it's affected my knees and I couldn't really walk, and then there's the incident with my shoulder that actually had me reaching for the leftover oxycodone that I was prescribed for my knee surgery so I could even lie in bed. So we'll see, I guess.

Chloroquine is similar to plaquenil which is what I’ve been on for a few years now. Started on one tablet and then on to two a day. I have not had any side effects at all. I think plaquenil is tolerated better so if it’s too much then trial plaquenil which is hydroxychloroquine or something. I stopped taking it for a couple of months to see if it was still necessary. It took a couple of months then realised I was experiencing significant fatigue again and realised that the plaquenil was helping a lot. Rheumatologist was quite pleased I took this trial as it confirmed to her that it was still something I needed. It’s the first line of treatment for most of these kind of chronic issues. It will take a few weeks to see any changes. My knees used to hurt along with shoulders. I realised after about 6 months my knees were great. But it was the fatigue that it really really helped. It calms the immune system which clearly causes exhaustion when it’s in overdrive.

I had some fun in Thailand recently and probably the worst trip I've had with pain.

Thoughout most of the trip I had swelling in fingers moreso in right hand, quite severe osteoarthritis in right wrist followed by pain up the arm to the outside of the elbow where tendonitis is severe (inside of the elbow also suffering) and then pain up the arm to the shoulder and continuing under the chin where the right collarbone is swollen quite badly and uncomfortable.

There are probably 4-5 different issues there and I'm not sure there's an easy solution. I don't want to keep taking drugs. GP has described Mobic and after taking it for 2 weeks there's no difference.

The fun part was waking up Wednesday morning and no pain. Played golf and expecting to spray the ball everywhere but shot 8 over after being 2 over on front nine.

Thursday morning I was badly hungover. Haven't been like that for a long time. I was also pain free. 2 days in a row is very rare. Was going to pull the plug on golf but continued. Waiting to tee off and I'm still not feeling well. As it turns out caddie had an ice bag which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for my head. Expected to spray the ball everywhere but that didn't eventuate. I had 13 pars and 5 bogeys including a 3 putt and missed many opportunitues for birdie for one of my best rounds in Thailand. I kept waiting to stuff up but that didn't eventuate.

Pain back to normal since. I'm seeing a physio to try and unlock my neck and left side of rib cage where it has been locked for a long time. No luck so far.
