While travelling in Europe I discovered this handy app Moovit which displays public transport depending upon city visited. So for me it has worked in Italy, Florence, Naples, Zagreb and Brisbane.

The advantage for me over others:

The same app works in many cities. No need to hunt down the local transport app and language issues.
Compared to Google Maps I found the app interface much cleaner.
Compared to Google Maps I found the app more up to date with more connection options.
Live Tracking while enroute was a good feature.
Manually selecting locations was easy to do, able to move the image to pinpoint exactly where I was and where I wanted to go.

This is now part of my travel 'kit' of apps.

Citymapper is another global one covering 25+ cities at latest count (including Sydney and Melbourne in Oz).

In general all the transport apps seem to use GTFS feeds (a standard developed by Google) so I'm surprised you are noticing a difference

As a google fanboy so I am surprised. They seem to have many countries on board - Moovit: Your Public Transit Guide in 90+ Countries

Probably the interface with its focus on public transport is the big difference. Google Maps annoys be a little by displaying maps and places in local language. That annoys me and I didn't experience that in Moovit.
