Great news (pending the hopefully soon finally approved JV with AA)!

QFi continues its expansion. If only PER airport weren’t so corrupt and hopeless they would have Joburg and also Paris in the works :(. But two new US routes from outside of Syd is awesome news!

Wonder what the flight numbers will be - QF5? QF17? QF21? QF31? QF47? QF53? QF77?

QF17 and 77 have been in recent use, but I wondered the same thing myself. My bet is QF21 for ORD.

Not actually an announcement of a new route, just that Qantas "wants to fly" BNE-ORD, said Mr Joyce (according to that article). Mr Joyce has been known to put big plans out there to great acclaim, then later quietly retract them. Standard QF tactic, as we all know.

QF21 is still used for adhoc seasonal SYD-NRT flights and once they pull the 747 from HND, or Australia gets issued a 2nd HND slot and QF jumps on it, they are likely to resume a 2nd SYD-TYO flight with the 21/22 numbers.

Does the 787 have the legs for SYD-ORD? Or more to the point ORD-SYD? If so, would be a surprise to see BNE-ORD launched rather than SYD-ORD. Otherwise might find it’s like QF7/8 was initially SYD-ORD-BNE-SYD.

BNE-SFO makes more sense (MEL and SYD already served).

Re: numbers, current US flights are 3/4; 7/8; 11/12; 15/16; 49/50; 73/74; 93/94; 95/96.

So really it could be anything not regularly in use.

I’m tipping they wont use 13/14 (especially to USA), wont use 5/6 (save for Paris/BER/LHR/EU in general), but anything not currently I use upwards from there is fair game.

Sorry, missed one.

Did ok off the top of my head!

No. Hence why it is BNE-ORD. Once aircraft come online for Qantas that can do SYD-ORD and, for that matter, SYD-LHR, these stop-gap routes such as BNE-ORD and PER-LHR will be dropped.

With the arrival of Project Sunrise, Qantas will become even more SYD- and MEL-centric than it already is.

Bad news for BNE- and PER-based flyers.

Well that’s not certain, remember they are smaller planes on skinny routes and they could in in time build their own market, at least some of them AND... the big elephant in the room (more for EU flights) is when QF builds up enough business and routes to let EK go....

Pricing of the direct ESB to the world hub busting flights haven’t been released yet either you may well find QF try and extract a significant premium to begin with and leave some stop over flights to pick up the scraps.

There are a lot of variables and think it’s a bit generalised to say the current routes will categorically dripped - you don’t know that although may wel happen :) Probably no one does for sure right now.

Of course nothing in life is certain, but BNE-ORD & PER-LHR require (i) a lot of premium traffic because QF has configured the aircraft capable of doing these routes as premium heavy and, therefore, (ii) feeder traffic from SYD and MEL where the bulk of premium traffic emanates, which will dry up once those people can go direct from MEL and SYD.

BNE and PER can only sustain a handful of destinations in their own right. Even fewer with premium-heavy aircraft. LHR and ORD are not two such destinations.

Hold your horses. There has not been any announcement about BNE-ORD. Just speculative comment.

From the MR - “Qantas expects to announce details of two new routes – Brisbane-Chicago and Brisbane-San Francisco – once final approval is received.”

That’s a little more certain than “speculation”. As good as formally announced.

SFO is turning into a mini QF hub... I wonder how the MEL flights are going, I’ve flown them 6 times since launch and J has been full every single time. Wonder if they will go daily at some point.

“Expects to announce”. Well that means it has not been announced yet... and because it’s not directly from AJ, yes that also means that it is speculation at this point.
