One way ticket with qantas

I have been able to secure two award business class seats for Syd - Lax for August 2009 which is fabulous BUT I seem to have overlooked the fact .......how to get back as we wont have enough points to obtain an award seat return. I guess I really didn't think the whole thing through properly and just got involved with the great business class seats availability.!!

Would it be possible to get my son who lives in the USA to purchase a return ticket from Lax and then only use the Lax -Syd leg. I don't seem to be able to book a one way ticket from Lax to Syd on the qantas site. I really don't want to have any problems with immigration so would like to make sure I do things correctly. I have heard that the immigration folk at the USA border are very strict.

I have heaps of time to organise the tickets but would appreciate some expert advice.

As 2 of you are going, I would start looking for reward availability on the return sector. Once found. Cash in 1 of the AUS-LAX tickets, then purchase a rtn for the other person.

You could buy a one-way AA fare to HNL and then a one0-way JQ fare back to Australia.

Try going to the QF website and in the top left just under the 'home" tab there is an option to "choose your region". If you set this to "Americas" you can try and buy one way flights to Oz.
I just got quoted US$2,200 for a one way LAX-SYD next July - in economy. Note prices are in US$.
Not saying the is the best/cheapest option - it is just an option.
You could also try booking on AA's website AA.com - and still fly QF direct to Sydney.

Ditto, this is what I do at least once or twice every year.

I have found that AA & Hawaiian have the best one way fares to HNL from LAX or SFO (approx $260 if booked when they have the low fares available), then get a one way fare with JQ to Sydney, or use points if you have enough.

As mentioned, the LAX to HNL to SYD routing is probably the cheapest one way ticket home and it should cost under $1k per person

And you could break this trip up and spend a couple or more days in Honolulu and enjoy the sun & surf.

Thank you everyone for all your advice. I will look into the Lax-hnl-syd route as it sounds the cheapest. My husband is keen to do the non-stop flight though so will keep looking for the one way tickets with AA or on the "Americas" site with qantas.

You could also buy a LAX-SYD-LAX return fare on Qantas, the current special (sales) are around USD993 for the round-trip. Just don't use the flight home (or save it for another trip). As pointed out above, you will need to select 'Americas' as the region on the QF booking engine.

With the current exchange rate the USD993 is a little more expensive than $1000 for one way, but you will have a non-stop flight, and you won't have to overnight in HNL (all flights from HNL to SYD leave in the morning, too early for mainland connecting flights).

Thank you so much for the advice .... are you sure it will be ok to buy the lax-syd-lax ticket and then to use the one leg and save the syd-lax for another time or discard it. Will they ask me any hairy questions at check in or will there be no problems that you can see.

As they will have no idea you arent going to check in for the return leg. As afar as they are concerned you are going to return like everyone else on the plane...

Just make sure you phone them to cancel the return sector (after you have made the forward journey, that is) - doing so allows them to sell the seat again, and could possibly mean that (if the return flight is heavily booked) someone who would otherwise be unable to travel is able to do so.

Personally for me, if I purchased the LAX-SYD-LAX ticket, I would not discard the SYD-LAX leg but rather make a quick return visit to LA (just for fun) or to visit other cities. I'd use the maximum 12 month rule and try to return to LAX somtime around June-August 2010. This way you can at least travel annually

If you catch the travel bug, you could always purchase another LAX-SYD-LAX ticket in 2010, with a return to LA in 2011 and so on...

Just bearing in mind that when you are searching for the cheapest tickets they will usually only have a validity for 1 or 3 months... if you plug in a 12 month return date the cost of the ticket may be quite high.

Depending how short you are on points for the return, you can buy QFF Points (if you haven't done so in the last 12 mths) and see if you can claim a reward ticket back.

That sounds great... thanks for the advice. If all goes well I plan to visit my son and family in the US twice yearly if possible. Hopefully soon I will have enough points to obtain another award seat home and then should be back to purchasing Syd-Lax return. Thanks again for all the help
