I have two J seats on the SFO-MEL 787 route for QF, in each direction, which I am going to cancel in favor of some VA seats LAX-SYD and MEL-LAX on slightly better dates for my purposes. I booked through AAdvantage.

I have no idea if they're likely to be released back to award inventory immediately. Anyone knowledgeable lurking? And if they're likely to be available, does anyone want to be ready to go before I pull the trigger?

Dates are 3 July ex SFO on QF50, and 20 July ex MEL on QF49.

Likely these 2 seats will go back into the inventory and reappear in a different fare class - at least the lowest class advertised at the time of refund. Not necessarily the same fare class when it was sold.

I've seen 'em go back and I've seen 'em not go back. Could go either way :D
