Outbound-Inbound price difference

Hi All,
I have been searching prices PER-BOG in J on Qantas under the current 'PREMIUM CLASS SALE'. I am 'curious' as to reasons why the out bound price is more than 50% greater than the inbound price ($3951 to $2564). I am "sure" the fees etc flying east are no greater than flying west but it appears if originating in Australia then prices are higher!!!!(maybe I've just answered my own question), any reply/reason would be greatly appreciated as the price difference is considerable

Depends on your perspective. It's either an "Australia Tax" or "what the market will bear"
It does buffer international flight prices somewhat-airfares have not risen much while the AUD has fallen significantly over the last 5 years

is actually stronger now than at times in 2015 & 2016

The actually plunge as you can see from graph, happened in SEP 2014, but from middle of 2015 it's been relatively stable, moving in a range of 68 to 80 cents.

It's not a good idea to compare fares at the same time in opposite directions, because of differing demands at certain times of year, eg. school holidays, when demand is high, plus there are many fares in different classes.

Was recently looking at business class fares to USA over Christmas period & fares varied enormously, even by moving date by only 1 day.

The airline I was looking at had 4 different business class return airfares SYD/LAX/SYD varying from $4000 to $7000. Some days there weren't many seats left at $4000. Also on those particular dates when I searched for 1 seat, price was $4000 & then when I searched for 8 seats, the price went up to $7000 each. Search engines are dumb & don't ever average fares.

Thanks for your replies, but I cant see why PER/SYD-BOG is more than 50% more than BOG-SYD/PER. My thoughts are the SYD-SCL is "more popular" than SCL-SYD and is priced accordingly. I have searched days either side of the entered date of travel and still the same result, as Burmans says, competition, supply and demand........ sucks

check a month or 3 either side of your dates, making sure avoiding any peak periods like school holidays
