The missus and I will be on an overnight layover in HKG, CX connecting to CX (arrive from KIX early afternoon, depart to MEL next morning). We have a hotel booking in Kowloon and intend to do some sightseeing.

We may decide we want some/all of our luggage with us in Hong Kong. But if not, will we be permitted to check-through all the way from KIX to MEL despite intending to leave the airport at the layover?

Leaving the airport with your bags checked through is no problem. You can also choose to short check some bags and check others all the way through (I would put the bags you want to collect in Hong Kong under the one person though, rather than each of you having a bag you want to collect for example. This way the baggage is kept nice and simple).

The issue is the overnight connection - but I think CX is ok for connections as long as they are under 24 hours.
