Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Delays at SYD due to greater than expected ATC sickies

Quickstatus, from previous reports months or longer ago this isn't the only occurrence.

Is this due to some wage/salary union campaign, genuine sickness or desire on the part of some staff to have the full weekend off?

Sickies....or chronic understaffing?

Doesn't strike me as logical that Airservices Australia would deliberately understaff, because the union or employees would then consider strike action, or some sort of work-to-rule. We'd have also heard complaints featured in various public media.

Is there benchmarking to see whether Australian controllers are as efficient as those at comparable airports in Europe or Asia, for instance?

It's a matter of regrettable public record that some unionists in Australia in other sectors (fireys is one, various railways another) are very 'clever' at organising sick days to maximise overtime for others. Hits taxpayers and governments for six, especially in Victoria.

QF462 (VH-XZE) on the MEL - SYD run should arrive at 2117 hours, 52 minutes behind schedule.

QF636, the 2010 hours northbound MEL up to BNE has VH-VZY. It took off at 2110 so estimated arrival is 2210, 50 late.

Adequate staffing has to include an expectations that a certain number of sickies occur . The “spin” is that that number is greater than usual. But I don’t know if the reality is something else

And yet I've been in workplaces where with 10 or 15 people, quite often there's no one off sick. Granted, if a virus hits, three or four might be suddenly afflicted. There should also be an expectation in Australia that unionists turn up when rostered unless genuinely sick or there's a serious family emergency.

Apparently airlines are starting to cancel mainly domestic flights tomorrow

Saturday is on an overall basis the quietest day of the week is it not domestically? One could understand flights being cancelled on Sunday afternoons, Monday mornings or Friday evening, but Saturday?

The defective B789 (VH-ZNE) that was unable to operate Thursday 17 January 2019's QF9 from PER to LHR and Friday 18's QF10 LHR - PER remains in Perth according to monitoring websites. It needs to be flying again tomorrow afternoon if other B789 flights are to avoid cancellation.

A333 VH-QPJ on QF158 ex AKL arrived in MEL on Friday night at 2210 hours, 45 late.

QF25, the Friday 18 January 2135 hours SYD up to HND (B744 VH-OEB) departed at 2157 but did not take off until 2230, so arrival on Saturday 19 is at an expected 0536, 36 late.

What is probably a 'ferry flight', QF6116 (B789 VH-ZND) is operating north from MEL, having taken off on Saturday 19 January at about 1013 hours. Is it off to BNE? The aircraft had arrived in MEL this morning 17 minutes early on QF30, the ex-HKG redeye.

Friday 18's QF9 was unusually operated by VH-ZNA MEL to PER, and then by the B789 that had been defective, VH_ZNE to LHR. See above for how there was a return cancellation of QF9/QF10 PER - LHR - PER due to ZNE requiring attention in Perth. As at 1020 AEDT, VH-ZNA was still in PER.

On Saturday 19 January, QF23, the 1030 hours SYD - BKK is back to its bad habits with departure 51 late meaning likely arrival half an hour late at 1640.

The 1055 hours midmorning SYD - PVG QF129 pushed back 58 late with suggested arrival early this evening at 1917 hours, 47 minutes behind schedule.

QF12 arrived on Saturday in BNE 16 minutes early at 0819 but expected departure of 'the 11' (BNE - LAX) is delayed by 70 minutes to 1230 hours. This will mean that the Saturday QF11 from LAX across to JFK is tardy, as will likely be the case with QF12 JFK back during teh early evening to LAX on Saturday 19.

Friday 18's JNB - SYD, QF64 was off blocks in South Africa at 2024, 94 late so Saturday 19 SYD arrival is suggested as 1731, 116 minutes past the allotted.QF63 on Friday had only been one minute late arriving in JNB (1636 hours). AFFers must travel on 'the 63/64' at times with its ageing B744s but we receive very few reports from a man or woman on the spot so if you encounter a delay, please try to establish why it's occurred and provide us with some details as to how the delay(s) was/were handled by QF.

Friday's QF27 was only three late arriving in SCL but this B744 will arrive on Saturday (as QF28) half an hour late at 1810.

QF19, the 1225 hours SYD - MNL is predicted to depart at 1325 with a 40 minute late arrival at 1810 hours.

Re the posts above on Sydney ATC.
Heard there is an EBA negotiation underway.

That was what I was thinking when I posted the other day re whether the sickies were genuine or not.

You can always hand it to Australia's unions to cause trouble for the rest of the population, even though fewer than 15 per cent of workers in private enterprise belong to them and far fewer than half of government employees. Unfortunately unionists have control of some of our most important industries - and don't we know it.

In more on Sunday 20 January, QF94 arrived MEL 13 early at 0937 but QF35 (1220 hours MEL up to SIN) was again delayed, departing at 1302. Arrival is expected as 1752, 47 late for A388 VH-OQL.

On Saturday 19, the ex-JFK QF12 (B789) was off blocks at 1853 (53 late), arriving LAX at 2145, 50 minutes behind schedule. The connecting QF12 to SYD is predicted to push back half an hour late at 2300.

UPDATE: The Sydney-bound QF12 A388 departed LAX on Saturday at 2314 hours, 44 late so Monday 21 January SYD arrival is forecast at 0914 hours, 39 minutes behind the timetable.

I missed this yesterday - apologies - but when QF10 was cancelled ex LHR on Friday 18 January, the Saturday 19 scheduled 1415 hours PER - MEL had B789 VH-ZNA that had been in Perth since its arrival ex MEL the previous day on the initial QF9 sector. The transcon Saturday QF10 took off at 1706, arriving MEL at 2320, 150 minutes late.

QF49 on Saturday night, the 2235 hours MEL - SFO was consequently delayed, taking off at 0102 this morning and arriving at 1927 on Saturday evening, 92 late.

The aircraft turned around and formed QF50, the 2010 hours airborne at 2122. On Monday 21 January, expected MEL arrival is 0654, only nine minutes behind schedule.
