New Amex statement credits

Harvey Norman - spend $250 to get $50 back. Valid till 30/10/18.
HN Gordon manager today said they received notification from HQ to only accept cash for GCs!! WTF…she wasn't convinced about this herself and let her staff member sell me a $500 GC split over 2 Amex cards….you think we were robbing HN!!

HN acting like they are doing customers a favour when selling their own GC or even worse, rudely declining to sell giving all kind of bullshit excuses. I’m sick of their attitude and current offer not that good anyway so I'm sitting this one out.

I had to restock on HN GCs and now they last 3 years :). Last year HN Balgowlah didn't care how I paid for GCs so if I want more might try there next time!

ps ALWAYS, ALWAYS find the cheapest deal and then get HN to price match as they are often more expensive!! Item I wanted was $398 on HN website, $428 at HN Gordon store!!, and $349 at both JB HiFi and Officeworks so I got them to price match JB HiFi, and then whipped out the remaining GC I had from 2 years ago which is about to expire, and one GC from last year for the balance....and then will collect the GST back in 7 weeks' time making the actual cost $226 :) :)

HN Balgowlah were very quick to refuse Amex on vpay and visa GCs in previous offers. They got round this later by not stocking them (which is their right)
I agree that refusing Amex for HN GCs is poor form.

It is just typical behaviour from the man who brought us GST on imported goods under $1000!!

I'm not aware of any store stocking them now.

From memory, they also stop selling e-gift cards on the website during the Amex promos (well you can order it... but they won't issue the card).

I got around this last time by literally ordering the minute the promo went live. Lucky timing.

That said, I'm kinda glad I have no need to use it this time around. I hate giving money to this foul company.

I’ve ordered e-GC online during one of the recent promos, they were happy to take the money but didn’t deliver. After few days of waiting I send an angry email and magically got all cards in my inbox the next day plus an apology for the “misunderstanding”.

If Harvey Norman is funding part of the promotion they may not want to give people access to free cash for a very little commission.

If Amex is funding the promotion they may have instructed Harvey Norman not to allow selling of gift cards via the promotion as again this gives people access to free cash.

I'd disagree that its free cash given that there arent any cash-like giftcards on sale anymore.
Buying HN giftcards is giving HN guaranteed income regardless of whether it is ever redeemed. Furthermore the spend will be earning/offsetting interest for HN rather than the customer. There will be an advantage to the customer in being able to delay a purchase to wait for a sale (or a need to buy) . However this is the giftcard business model.

The discussion is about HN not allowing to purchase their own gift cards. How can those be converted to cash?

By the same principle, people can also sell a fridge
Agree. Fridge is therefore free money as well.

Although, undeniably, gift cards are easier to sell than a fridge. The fridge is probably not a very good example for you to use though, as I would think it would be difficult to sell the fridge for more than you paid for it, unless the AMEX cash back deal was significant. Fridge has instant devaluation, gift card does not.

IIRC previous amex HN statement credit offers have explicitly mentioned "no gift cards" and it's not there this time; other than this in the full offer terms. Maybe they think it's under control

The comment was about robbing Harvey Norman.

Part of the discussion from some people is that Harvey Norman continue to sell Visa gift cards for the measly $5.95 fee they receive.

I'm not sure what the deal is with with Harvey Norman gift cards but there may well be some glitch we don't know about. Buy goods and then ask for refund? If you pay using gift card they may refund with cash?
