Be aware that if you hire a car and drive in the following countries, you will be required to purchase a vignette and display it on your windscreen. A vignette is a form of road tax, and in some cases, you will still have to pay road tolls. The countries that require a vignette are:
Slovakia
Slovenia
Austria
Czech Republic
Switzerland
Bulgaria
Romania and
Hungary
You can but vignettes at gas stations near the border or in some cases online. You can purchase vignettes for different periods of time except for Switzerland where you have to buy an annual vignette even if you are just passing through. It can become quite expensive as on a recently completed trip we required four vignettes which all had to be attached to the windscreen.
The fines for not purchasing a vignette are huge, and if you have purchased a vignette but do not have it displayed on the windscreen, you will be fined heavily as well. You may never be checked but it isn't worth the risk.

The vignette for Austria and Switzerland is only required if you use a motorway, not for other roads.

There is also a vignette required to park in Berlin available at service stations. This is in addition to parking fees.

Yep, just have experienced this and no real issue. Some of the tolls were quite hefty especially in Austria but more than happy to pay. I refused to pay for the Vignette in Switzerland as we were only going to be driving for less than a day there and the cars Satnav easily took us roads not requiring the Vignette. Fuel price in Europe is the biggest rort more so than any tolls or Vignette’s

That's exactly what we did in Austria. We were only just passing through briefly as we drove around Lake Constance, so avoided the motorway and only added 20 minutes or so to our journey.
