Hi there - I want to travel HEL-HBA in early January on points (in J if that matters). Unsurprisingly, when I try and book it as a single one-way flight there are no results. However, I've been playing around with the multi-city booking tool and can find award space flying HEL-NRT-MEL-HBA with an overnight in Melbourne.

My question is this: Qantas will let me book HEL-NRT (AY) /NRT-MEL (JL) with a one hour stop in NRT - would I be protected if the first flight is delayed?

HEL-MEL on the same dates are showing nothing however when looking via the Avios tool it can be booked as a single leg.

Thanks for any help you can give!

If you are booking a single ticket, as per your screenshot, then the airline is allowing it and you would be "protected". Or at least helped if it all goes pear-shaped.

wow I just booked nearly a similar leg but the other way round. From 15 Dec and back 1 jan Syd-NRT-HEL-Mad-Syd.

TIP: Please check....sometimes there is a big price difference between JAL and Finnair (more tax). I did not research alot. If both are available try both airlines and check the price difference.
I actually called Qantas on the Premium line (I am Platinum with Qantas) and they guided me as the qantas website was behaving funny on the single leg question. You dont have to book with qantas. Have a nice trip.
