WestJet/Qantas flights from Canada

Hi everyone!
Quick question to all of you frequent travellers out there.
flying back to Melbourne Australia from Kelowna Canada we have 3 flights
kelowna-calgary/ calgary-lax/ lax-melbourne.
being kelowna is a very small airport will our bags be tagged all the way through to melbourne or will that happen in calgary?
Also would we get all our boarding passes from kelowna do you think?
sounds silly but would i request a upgrade in lax for the long haul or in canada ?

First question first, what flight numbers have your purchased as this may affect your ability to request an upgrade altogether. Are these flights on the same ticket, as that may help answer any interlining questions.

Secondly, only limited QFi flights are actually upgradeable, and the request if eligible must be done online in advance. You have more chance of winning the lotto than asking for an upgrade at check-in.

International Classic Upgrade Rewards may be requested on certain international Points Plus Pay –Flights but are not available on international airfares booked in E, N, O, Q class (which includes some Qantas Points Plus Pay - Flights and some international Red e-Deal fares).

all of the flights are QF flight numbers if that is any help and booked all on the same ticket

What fare bucket are the international flights? Are you looking at using points to upgrade?

i am not to sure how to tell what fare bucket we have.
and would like to possibly use points from lax-mel

both flights with westjet have economy (O)
Qantas flight is economy (S)
does that mean anything?

You will have to pre-clear US customs and immigration in Calgary, so you'll have to pick up your bags there, at least, although they may be tagged through to LAX. I doubt Westjet will tag through/issue BPs to MEL, but that's just a suspicion.

According to this web page Qantas S class should be upgradable. You'd go online under Manage my Booking on QF web site and request - to PE or J I guess. No harm in trying, but without status, low chance.

We travelled last year YVR - LAX westjet then LAX - SYD QF, all on same booking with QF flight numbers. Did US customs in YVR, baggage checked all the way through to SYD. Also BP all the way through to SYD as well. That was in Jul last year, so you should be able to get all your BP all the way through to MEL.

Agree with RooFlyer, you may need to pick up bags in Calgary to complete pre-US customs check. At least all your luggage will then be checked through and you don’t have to worry about it in LAX. Hope that helps.
