General Medical issues thread

Well good luck for that. Good news re the scans - bet you are pleased. How long will you be in hospital?

Thanx.
Scan news was excellent, especially as he gave me another 3 months off the chemo. However he mentioned that another patient had 9 months off before something showed up and had to go back on treatment..
Just an overnight stay apparently.

I was held 30 minutes late for first appointment. Dr was talking with a Med Rep. I was not impressed and no apology either. I love chocolate bullets. You raise an interesting point. Hmmm.

My derm is like this as she has a couple of urgent slots available before scheduled appointments. She is also booked out 6 months in advance...

If I have an afternoon appointment, I always call ahead and find out what time I should actually turn up and guarantee I still end up waiting.

Whooping cough swept through our 2 sons workplace and they had their shots. We are due to have ours as soon as our GP gets back from his hip operation.
Our sons are both going to Russia for the World Cup Soccer so they are getting extra shots as being sick over there might not be very pleasant.
My new blood pressure medication took about a month to really kick in and now I really like getting home from a work day and have a reading of 128/68. I think my cardiologist is pretty good.

I think most of my friends who are becoming grandparents are having whooping cough vaccinations- to be on the safe side.
I'm not sure wife and I have ever had whooping cough or had the vaccinations. Think this is something we need to research further.

Must be the season for it...MrLtL had a tooth extraction yesterday morning. Mercifully it seems fine as he had to chair the BC AGM last night. Surgery rang this morning to check he was all OK.

Tomorrow into the breech again to try and get the botched musclewall repair fixed and some flywire put in to reinforce. Have to be at hosp at 7.30 am - didn't realise there was such a time in the morning.

Well, an overnight stay has turned into a 3 or 4 night stay. Good thing I had medical insurance when I saw the projected cost, otherwise I may have required resuscitation.

At my initial appt, my surgeon thought it wouldn't be a huge operation, but when he saw me this am ìn ICU he said he had to do a large repair. This afternoon when I was back in my room the anaesthetist came to see me and said the same.

Following the operation and recovery I was back in my room with my wife sitting with me, when she called the nurse because she didn't like the sound of my breathing while I was asleep. The nurse had difficulty in rousing me.

Levels of hierarchy were escalated and the anaesthetist was recalled and me and my entourage were shunted off to ICU.

I was completely out to all this excitement and woke up at 1am feeling a bit wobbly and wondering why I was in a different room.

Anyway I am much better now and have been out of bed and walking several times today, so may be here until Monday if my surgeon so decides.

I may have dodged a bullet here and lucky my wife was with me at the hospital.

Can't say 'Like' to that. But very pleased that things have turned out OK. Bet you gave your wife quite a scare. She was very wise to call someone when she didn't like the sound of your breathing. Glad you are on the mend now. Don't be in too much of a hurry to get out of hospital.

They won’t give them without Drs consent. Coz we are not grown up enough. Bring on the universal health records.

With good reason - there are cases overseas where patients have received their results directly, and have committed suicide because of them. One notable one was a young girl who had been raped, and got the STD screen which showed her as positive for HIV on initial screen. She committed suicide; confirmatory testing showed she was HIV negative.

It's better for these results to be interpreted by someone with knowledge of the tests, know what the next steps are, be there to provide appropriate counseling etc. See above, where Drron and I have talked about troponins - a lay person may get distressed that they "are having a heart attack", while doctors will be more aware of the other causes.

Even with online health records, "significant" results will not be uploaded to it in real time (for patient view); what counts as significant is currently being debated, but all histology results (ie all tissue samples - including your skin biopsy) will not be available for a certain period of time (to allow the doctor requesting the tests time to get the results and arrange to see the patient if required).

I do get a copy of my blood tests but that is so I can see if the exercising I am doing is having any effect.
I talk to the doctors who organize the testing.

Biofeedback is really important and blood tests are a part of that. My GP always hesitates when I ask for them. I think it’s just the pain of printing them. But if the Health Records function was working we would have all the access we would want. But no one loads up the reports.

Ah damn. Least it’s gone now and treatment effective these days. I thought they usually just excised though. What is the treatment?

I'm guessing cream, Aldara or the like, there has been discussion on here previously, hope it all goes well however they decide to treat it.

When we got home earlier this week, I had a letter stating it was time for my regular checkup. Something has come up on my arm, not like something I've seen before and it's dark, hopefully it can just be fried off with the liquid nitrogen spray.

I know Dad had multiple BCC over the years thanks to Naval Service on an aircraft carrier and no sun protection at all. He did have a Gold Card as a result and that paid for all his surgeries.

Yep Aldara. She's warned that I may not feel that crash hot. Can't be excised due to location on the tip of my shoulder.
