Have resolved my problem ... but posting as a possibly useful reference if others have similar problem.

I rented a car at Zurich Airport from Europcar in September 2016.

Recently I received from Swiss police a traffic violation for a date a year later. I was in Australia.
Contacting the Swiss polizei was useless. They were totally disinterested in helping me resolve the issue. As far as they were concerned I was the culpable driver and it was my issue to resolve with Europcar.

I thought about simply ignoring the issue, but then I reconsidered and decided it was best not to have something hanging over me when I next visit Switzerland. After all they have a reputation of being more efficient in their bureaucracy than many places.

My next step was the "Contact us" link on Europcar's website.
That got zero response (although I found out later they had tried but missed a letter in my email address - their error)

After a week or so and no apparent response, I put a comment on their Facebook page and received an immediate response - asking me to send a copy of the infringement to [email protected]
In parallel I had emailed rentalcars.com (who I had originally booked through) and they put me in touch with an appropriate Europcar manager, who put me in touch with the right people in Switzerland.
Swiss Europcar group email address is [email protected]

Once I had the contact with the key people the issue was resolved fairly quickly, although the Swiss police only confirmed I was in the clear after I chased them.

Summary
For Switzerland contact Europcar at [email protected]
Anywhere else, I suggest going straight to Facebook - it has a better response than the website.

It is handy for others that you have posted. I am a little surprised that the Swiss police were less than helpful

Thnx.
Swiss police were very polite but unhelpful.
I guess authorities everywhere might think - "here we go, someone trying to weasel out of a fine".
Also, I was asking them to expend effort they really didn't need to.
Understandable if you are not affected, but frustrating when you are.
