What has changed at ADL security

What has prompted ADL airport security to move explosives screening to landslide, it happened 2-3 back. What seems to make no sense is the security guards pick 3 to 4 pax at random, take sample swab on all pax and luggage (using the same swab) then test. If a positive result is returned all 3-4 would have to de individually screen. It seems to make no sense.

It's pretty much the same at other airports. The multiple pax test. I'm guessing, but I think it allows the testing of far more pax. They can test 3 or 4 pax in only a bit more time than it took to test just 1 pax.

Thanks I had not noticed a change at MEL but have only used the VA security attached to the lounge. Last QF flight ex MEL was 18/11 and explosives screening was still airside on that trip.

I thought it may have just been an ADL thing.

The "change" was in full use at MEL international a few weeks ago.

The change makes sense to me. It seems logical given the extremely low strike rate to do a few at once. (the usefulness or otherwise of the test itself may be a different story)

I think it just goes to show what a collossus waste of money the whole charade is with the excuse of ‘security’.

I think they are improving their procedures based on far more experience and info than the pax commenting have.....

When I saw the thread title I thought this was about the security lines at ADL being inordinately longer in the last three months. It's now common to see the line back out to the elevators in the morning (well, it's been common for me and I've done it a few in the last three months). I was told by a QF staff member that an express line may be coming soon and I guess this hasn't eventuated before because it's a joint use terminal.

The line tonight was well well past the normal snake queue. Then snakeing back 3 more lines through VA check in almost to VA help desk on far left. ADL bring on some type of priority line, please.

Well it all seems to be back to normal this week. No more landside explosives detection. May be a good idea at the time but may not have been practical.

Procedure in HBA for a long time has been for explosives tester to select one or more pax waiting to go through the security check-point. When cleared, they and belongings taken to front of queue. Works well.

Well it all seems to be back to normal this week. No more landside explosives detection. May be a good idea at the time but may not have been practical.

It was being done landside on Monday when I flew in the afternoon. They used the two outside lanes to pull people from the queue. It was all horribly confused, and caused a lot of congestion at the two gates that were doing “normal” security as those people were awkwardly slotted in. So when someone set the metal detector off and had to go through a couple of times there was a backlog of people crowded around. Just seemed like a logistically awful idea.

Thankfully the lines weren’t as horrendous as they have been lately, I dread to see how this would work in one of the longer queues.

On the way back from Melbourne on Wednesday morning, the checks were airside, and we were done in groups. Which makes it feel like such a pointless exercise.

So much more experience they have changed it back already, as reported.

I got done with one other bloke last Wednesday.(ADL) Wasn't happenning last month.. I put the multiple testing down to the contractor ISS security having a KPI to meet on explosive testing.

They are doing it that way everywhere. I actually object to a swab being passed over some else's dirty laundry before being wiped over my bag's interior (or whatever other permutation of that you can think of). But, they refuse to do you one at a time. Speed over hygiene...
