Different class of travel over and back

When is it possible to have different classes of travel ?
Have done so previously however believe it was a sale at the time?
Mr T wants to business over and premium back if feasible QF1 to London

I have flown a mix of Y and PE on QF to HKG, but I’m not sure about mixing with J. It was booked during a sale period

According to my travel agent it is possible but depends on the airline and their ticket pairing. Could end up paying a bit more.
The only way to really do it is to either call Qantas or use a travel agent as i dont think the website can handle that.

Some airlines actively facilitate this - e.g. Emirates - on their website if you do a multi-city booking you can select the class for each sector individually. Air France and others also used to (maybe still do) sell mixed class fares that involved Y on the shorter leg (e.g. Australia to Singapore) and J on the longer leg. You also sometimes see mixed class fares with all sorts of airlines on Expedia etc, but I think they only show up if there is no availability in the selected class on certain sectors. I don't think I've come across such an option with QF, but probably worth phoning them (or a travel agent) to ask.

There was a question like this asked recently, can’t remember if it was on here or on Flyertalk.

It seems that a) Travel agent is best place to look for such a ticket, b) from the itamatrix website you can price such a booking using certain codes that indicate Y one way (Class 3) and J they other (Class 2) - but I couldn’t work it out using Y+ and c) Most airlines offer mixed class return tickets that combine 50% of the return fares for both classes, however QF do not. They combine two one way fares, so is more expensive than a J return.

The cost of doing this on QF - even if they did combine half return fares - is likely to be more than several airlines return fares in business.

We actually did first /business end of 2016 on the site.
There was a sale on for first and business.
I am now wondering if only when there are/business sales

I discovered I could book Etihad SYD-AUH-LHR outbound J and inbound Y only by using the Virgin iOS app. I could not do this at all via browser (or at least work out how to do it).

I just did a dummy booking on the QF WEBSITE for an international booking Melb Auckland

It seems on one run through it wouldn't let me, but on a second run through it allowed me to select first in one direction and business in the other. Pricing didn't appear to change - perhaps for NZ its because its one way calculated fares

Isn't it simply because there is no F cabin on the aircraft operating the return leg in this example? You can always book fares including different classes on different sectors if your chosen class is not available on certain sectors. This even applies when the relevant cabin exists, but is sold out.

I regularly use a mixed fare for travel from Perth to Japan with CX

PE to HKG with a stopover (7 hour day time flight is an easy ask in PE)

PE to Haneda (4 hours is easy plus dedicated toilet for PE customers on 777)

J from Haneda to Perth (transit in HKG) and can sleep for 5 hours on overnight flight into Perth

Booking is made by telephone directly with CX and cost is around $4,100

Easily done with VN, we are thinking PE too CDG and J return.

I was trying to book SYD-JNB in PE, then JNB-SYD in J.....couldn't do it...but then I saw the Sale price for Biz return...lol

Booked through agent mixed fare sale with Qatar Airways J MelDoh Y into Europe some years ago. Approx $1500 saving compared J return. Enjoyed some exquisite dining in Europe with the price difference. Bad news was the overfollowing pax into my Y seat Europe to Doha. Best part comp at the gate J / F DohMel.. very nice completely unexpected..
