On Friday 10 November, QF2133 CBR-MEL was delayed for an hour because a CEO refused to put his tablet on flight mode.

Reported on 3aw Rumour File.

Selfish plane passenger forces massive flight delay
A Qantas flight headed for Melbourne was forced to return to the terminal after a passenger refused to put his tablet on “flight mode.”

“Point Blank No” told The Rumour File the selfish passenger was a company chief executive and that the flight was an hour late as a result.

Qantas has confirmed a passenger on flight QF2133 “did not follow instruction with regard to an electronic device” on a flight between Canberra and Melbourne on Friday night.

Wonder if he is/was a CL?

I thought the rules didn't apply to important people?

[/sarcasm]

Seriously though, this is ridiculous and I'm glad the passenger was removed from the flight. Good on the crew for sticking to their ground.

Refusal to switch on flight mode resulting in an hour delay of a flight full of other paying passengers - certainly sounds like this person fits into the 20% (referring to JB’s article link above)

The guy must be a hoot at parties and things.

CEO: Look, Ive read the threads on electronics during flights on AFFer. I know you can fly this plane while Im looking at memes! Im important, I have tags! See? Lots of tags!!!

Meh, I’ve sat next to a pilot and watched them take their company-supplied iPad off flight mode after takeoff. One rule for some, one rule for others. Guess it always depends how much fuss is made and who’s having the worse bad day as to how much they’ll bother responding.

While I always switch my devices to flight mode once we push back, the number of times I have seen -- and heard the bings -- as the FAs and travelling staff use their phones to receive emails and texts well into a flight, does make me feel a bit like it is one rule for some...

I think there are CEO's and then there are other CEO's!!!!! Fairly sure this person is not from a top 500 company. I've met some who are stubborn, not dumb!

It’s a CASA regulation - having it on is unlikely to affect the flight (especially in good weather) - but if they know you have it on they have to make you turn it off.

If you’re going to break the rules at least be discreet about it. Outright ignoring cabin crew is a quick way to get kicked off the flight.

We’ve been through this before. As soon as he refused, it was no longer about flight mode.

However, I've never seen a FA tell another staff member or pilot to switch their device to flight mode when needed, with an ensuing discussion which no longer becomes about flight mode.

True and I agree but the CEO was told to make the most simplest of changes and refused. He/She was threatened with being offloaded and they still refused. Then everyone was delayed.

Quite simply a tosser!

Are we sure it wasn’t Alan Joyce? :)

Is he allowed into the coughpit during flight?

Can you imagine the ensuing conversation?

A: Can I sit down in the coughpit for this one?
P: No Alan, go back to your assigned seat
A: Aw c'mon, just this once? I promise to be good.
P: I'm sorry, but I'm not going to tell you again.
A: You're killing me! Do you know who I am?
