Qantas
Platinum
Hi

Because I was fairly certain that a Qantas upgrade from MEL to LAX would not come through for our family of 4 on the 21 of Dec (despite hitting platinum in Sept), I decided to book sky couches on Air NZ [adding this in to see if I guessed rightly or wrongly - interested in views]. However, to get to our final destination, we have to change to a Delta flight in LAX. Will I be able to have my bags ticketed through so that once we clear customs, we can just dump them without dragging them to the Delta terminal. We have plenty of time, but it would be much easier not to have to cart them over.

Thanks!

Irrespective you have to pick up your luggage after immigration at lax, go through customs and redeposit/recheck them.

I doubt it'll be on a single ticket, so most likely Air NZ won't tag the bag through to your end destination. Even if they wanted to (which most airlines don't when customers book non-alliance airlines), I don't know if they have a baggage interline agreement with Delta. As such, you'll need to collect bags in LAX, clear customs and take the luggage to the Delta terminal to check-in and drop bags there.

That's what I thought was hoping for otherwise though . at least I know in advance.

Will this be in a single ticket?

I thought it was as it appeared that way on the paperwork from the travel agent. However, I had some questions for Air NZ yesterday and spoke to them and they said it wasn't on a single ticket because there is no relationship between Delta & Air NZ. The ANZ customer service rep I spoke to thought I wouldn't be able to tag my bags through but he wasn't sure. I'm pretty clear on the answer now. We have 4 hours in LAX so we will just take a cart and make our way to Delta domestic. On the way home we are spending time in the LA area so it's a one way problem that we can deal with.

Yes - well aware of this - but if it was ticketed through, it's a simple bag drop after clearing customs and not a schlep with bags to another terminal.

Does it make a difference? I know with AA I had bags tagged through but because of a missed connection the bag drop off point was able to confirm the new flight, check me in, print new labels and accept the bag. i wonder if DL can just do the same anyway?

I think it is different as you were going on to same carrier due to missed connection. I've kind of accepted I have to recheck in..and pay the domestic baggage fees.
