Why Changi Works

I'll buck the trend here, I prefer HKG to SIN. The latter is good for extended layovers, for sure, but HKG is great for short transfers, and it does that well... limited need to walk, gates close together. No bells and whistles outside the lounges, but not essential when you can connect to a whole bunch of cities within the hour. (not detracting from SIN's offering in any way, I just think they are designed around different concepts?)

And as for the retail area over the other side, the car park near Woolies has been chockers during the current school holidays. Not sure why people would drive all that way just to be inconvenienced.

Never go to Charnwood between 1530 and 1900 on a weekday then, or Belconnen on a weekend (or any time its raining).

The main issue at SIN is that all the "extra" stuff designed to keep people busy during long connections, for example the movie theater, pool, playground, etc aren't very well sign posted. I've know a lot of people who have looked for them, but never found them because they were upstairs and they thought the upstairs areas were all premium lounges.

The last time I entered the city, I was looking for a baggage storage place. It wasn't marked on any of the maps in the terminal, so I ended up taking my carry ons with me into the city. I only saw a single directional sign pointing to bag storage after I returned to the airport.

Charnie is fine, never a problem using the back car park!

And Changi, like SQ when it works which is 99% of the time it works brilliantly. Once there is a curveball thrown in, it turns to custard pretty quickly simply because it is so well scripted that when people are forced off script they struggle to think for themselves.

That is a problem with Singapore full stop. It can be quite frustrating. I see it in my office regularly . The education system focusses a lot on rote learning at the expense of problem solving.

I don't understand the whole Changi euphoria. I don't dislike the airport, it's quite nice, but I really don't see anything special there.
